Hi Janet,
After last Thursday’s devastating U.S. Senate vote, you may be wondering what you can do for the future of the Boundary Waters.
Please know that this fight is far from over. The state of Minnesota has a critical role to play in protecting the Boundary Waters watershed permanently from Twin Metals’ proposed sulfide-ore copper mine. Minnesota has the authority to prevent a sulfide-ore
copper mine in the Boundary Waters watershed — as all mining proposals require permits, and approval from state agencies through an environmental review process.
Read more about how the State of Minnesota can protect the BWCA.
Additionally, the Boundary Waters Permanent Protection bill (H.F 309 and S.F 875) is currently active in the Minnesota State Legislature. This bill would ban copper-nickel mining on state-owned lands
in the watershed of the Boundary Waters, and also bar the issuance of permits for copper-nickel mining in the entire watershed. It is one of the strongest tools in our toolbox to protect the BWCA, and prevent copper mining next to the Wilderness. This is exactly
why I am in St. Paul every day during the State legislative session, and why we’re working hard across the state to get our elected officials on board.
Minnesotans, now is the time to raise your voice right here at home — contact your State Representative and Senator and tell them to support protecting the Boundary Waters, permanently.
