Hi,

Very simple problem in France

With OpenDNS:
# ping pastebin.com
PING pastebin.com (69.65.13.216)

With GoogleDNS :
# ping pastebin.com
PING pastebin.com.siege.drb.fr (62.116.181.25)

In France, we do not have any access to the site pastebin.com through
the DNS of Google.

Question :
DNS poisoning, bug, French filtering ?

Hello,

There was a temporary problem to reach its authoritative name server from some of our resolvers. It seems that the problem has been resolved/disappeared. Please let us know if the problem still exists.

It OK for pastebin.com
But with http://en.wikipedia.org .... same problem with Google DNS !

Sorry, but I'm going to use OpenDNS, it seems more stable now.

Thanks for the report, and sorry about the trouble you're having.

So far as I can tell, Google Public DNS is resolving en.wikipedia.org
correctly in all locations, returning (with dig):

en.wikipedia.org. 3461 IN CNAME wikipedia-lb.wikimedia.org.
wikipedia-lb.wikimedia.org. 461 IN CNAME wikipedia-lb.pmtpa.wikimedia.org.
wikipedia-lb.pmtpa.wikimedia.org. 3461 IN A 208.80.152.201

What do you get when you run the following?
(Windows) nslookup -debug en.wikipedia.org. 8.8.8.8
(Mac or Linux) dig @8.8.8.8 en.wikipedia.org.
See also http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html#troubleshooting

I have to respectfully disagree with Yunhong's response on December
24. While we were having trouble reaching Pastebin's authoritative
nameservers, that would only have given you an "unknown host" error
from ping. That doesn't seem to be what you were reporting. I'm not
quite sure what problem you were seeing on the 24th, but I'm glad to
hear it's OK now.

Hope this helps. --PSRC

Hi

I just retested and the problem seems to have disappeared.

When the problem occurs, I have a display like the screenshot given
link.

http://img67.xooimage.com/files/2/3/2/googledns-3008bc9.png

Instead of "pastebin.com", I had "en.wikipedia.org".

Hope this will help to understand what happened.

Regards.

Vincent and Arty, thanks for your further reports. (I'm a little
nonplussed that both of you sent identical messages. Are you one user
sending the same report from two different accounts?)

The nslookup output shows that Google Public DNS is returning
reasonable server addresses, but the screen snapshots show that your
browser is showing content from a very different server. There are a
couple of possible explanations for that:

- Your PC could have some sort of malware that's redirecting you. If
you search via Google and see a message, "Your computer appears to be
infected," please proceed as described here:
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/using-data-to-protect-people-from.html
http://support.google.com/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1182191
You could have a malware problem even if you never see that message.

- Your ISP could have some sort of transparent web proxy. (This is a
less likely explanation.) If you've ruled out malware, try changing
your PC or router to get DNS servers automatically, then contact your
ISP.

Hope this helps; good luck! --PSRC

Hi,

>> Are you one user sending the same report from two different accounts?)
Yes, sorry, I test on 2 PC (with 2 accounts).

No infection possible, I tested with my Android phone in wifi and I
have the same problem, and on an PC with Linux ...

ISP ?
I don't use the DNS of my ISP, my router is configured to use DNS
directly from Google by specifying the two IP.
If there was a proxy problem, I should have the same problem using the
IP of OpenDNS, which is strangely not.

Is there a relationship between GoogleDNS and Parkingcrew ?
subcontracting ?

Thanks, Arty. You already posted the output you got from running:

nslookup -debug www.google.de. 8.8.8.8

Could you please also post the output you get from running:

nslookup -debug www.google.de. 4.2.2.2
nslookup -debug www.google.de. 208.67.222.222

And just to confirm: You have your router configured to use 8.8.8.8
and 8.8.4.4 for DNS servers?

Hope this helps. --PSRC

P.S.: There is no relationship between Google Public DNS and Parkingcrew.

Arty, thanks for all the diagnostic work you've done.

The output you sent shows that Google Public DNS and OpenDNS are
returning the same addresses (in different order). That means this
isn't a DNS problem.

You've said things seem to work better with OpenDNS. I presume that
means that if you configure your router to use OpenDNS, and then
possibly reboot your router, things improve. I wonder if it's the act
of configuring and/or rebooting your router that makes things better?

I can't help you any further, both because I'm out of ideas, and
because it's very likely this is not a DNS problem. Sorry.

Good luck! --PSRC

With each change, I reboot my router (DLink DSL-2740B) in the same
way, and my router is not against Google DNS (I hope) :-).

But, as mentioned above, there may be a problem with my ISP's proxy (I
do not know if he uses one), because the phenomenon seems to disappear
with time (possible synchronization of the caches) and the two
services don't provide the IP in the same order, perhaps the IP
(especially web content) coming from OpenDNS are faster cached
(OpenDNS may be more used by my ISP or more by the customers of my
ISP?)

Strange ...

Anyway, thank you for watching.
Thx.
