Hey all,

I have a new HP ENVY wireless Internet Printer.  It's one that communicates back to HP when my ink gets low and they automatically mail me new ink.  I can email a document to an email address I gave it and it'll print.  That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about but I'm sure you all know what it is.

Anyway, I have AT&T WiFi and when I went to set up the new printer, I couldn't get anything to work.  After trial and error I got it to install and connect the way it is supposed to do.  I could print with my IPhone, all laptops worked with the printer, all the features of the printer worked.  Then after about 5 minutes, it suddenly was disconnected.  I tried re-installing everything, but the same thing happened.  Nothing I tried helped at all.
I finally found a forum on AT&T and posted the problem there and one of the TECHS posted and said that they had come across this issue before and that if I would set a STATIC IP Address it would take care of the problem.  I went into the Printer and gave it a new IP address like she said and re-started everything.  The printer worked fine but this time instead of being kicked off after 5-10 minutes, it made it to about 45 minutes and was kicked off.  To get it back working again, I have to shut down the printer and re-start it.

The reason I am asking about the Google DNS is because there was another suggestion on the forum where I posted to solve the issue.  This guy said that I should set my printer up to use the GOOGLE Public DNS and that would likely take care of the issue.  He also said that lots of people have found that using the Google DNS resolved conflicts they were having with their devices.

After seeing the continued failures all day today, I am ready to try anything.

I can set any IP I want in the Printer setup.  I can also set the Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and Primary DNS server.  Where I get confused is with the DNS server.  The Primary DNS server on the printer is my AT&T router/gateway.  If I replace that with the Google Primary DNS, how will my printer get online access?  It won't be able to connect to the internet through my WiFi source, so how's it going to do it?

I apologize if these are totally stupid questions, but I have never had to deal with this kind of a problem before.

If you don't mind, can you explain it to me?  I would love to solve this issue with my HP wireless printer not being able to stay connected and if using the public Google info will do it, then I'm all for trying it.

Thank you for your time and any help you decide you want to give me.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I recently set my Optimum Online router to the Google public DNS and that's the only major change I've made to our home wireless network since I started experiencing the same issues you did. My HP Wireless printer needs to be rebooted every time I want to print or scan from my laptop. I just set a static IP and it scanned one thing fine before kicking off again a few minutes later.
