Stuck with an OpenDNS environment, tried using Google DNS and it does
seem
to speed things up 'a bit', but yet I still hit walls with certain
sites that come back
as blocked by OpenDNS. Mind you, NOT PORN - garbage like that can fly
like
mad but other categories are blocked? Seriously? Rigged isn't the
word for it.

So I did traceroutes to the Google DNS servers and in every case it
appears that
the DNS requests to the Google setups jump through the OpenDNS gate
and then
run around 15 places before landing at the Google DNS servers to get
me the return.
How that goes faster now is beyond me considering the hops and delay
times, but
how/where I can force the use of Google's DNS - period?

If you are the administrator of your network, you should definitely
contact OpenDNS support. It sounds like something is up with your
settings and they should be able to help you out quickly.
http://www.opendns.com/support/contact/

If you are not the administrator of your network, you should speak to
them. They can work directly with OpenDNS to resolve your issues.

Hi,

If you are tracing by IP (i.e. 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4) there is nothing that OpenDNS could influence there as there are no DNS lookups. Any routing oddity's that you may see when tracing by IP is down to something like your local machine, router, firewall and/or ISP.

If you could provide the testing information as mentioned on the Google Public DNS site - http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html#troubleshooting - it would help to some degree (as well as any before and after tests you can do).

Kind Regards,

Alex Smith
