I've also asked some of the companies about the issue of free parking.
In California a law requires that any company that provides free
parking must give an equivalent amount in cash to anyone who comes by a
non-car mode. Surely companies can do this on their own. See

Subject: [pttfgen:3980] Hinjewadi IT Park: 22,000 2- wheelers, 20,000
4-wheelers ply daily
Here is link to an very short article that has some useful numbers.
http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/22-000-2-wheelers-20-000-4wheelers-ply-daily/963714/
"Despite a majority of the IT firms in the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park
providing transport facilities to their employees and encouraging car
pooling, the number of vehicles plying the area still remains staggering. "
There are :
22,000 two-wheelers => around 30,000 people ?
20,000 four-wheelers => around 40,000 people ?
500 company contracted buses => around 25,000 people?
As usual (typical Indian journalism) they have not bothered to provide
other important numbers:
Q. How many no. of employees work in the Infotech Park, as of today and
estimated no. for next 2 years?
Q. What percentage those 20,000 four-wheeler do car-pooling? 20 % ? 50 % ?
These are very important numbers to find out. I have been trying to get
these numbers out with help of HIA, but more efforts are needed.
Thanks to petrol prices I suspect car-pooling percentage are pretty
respectable. Also 500 buses is a pretty good number, that would impress any
big services/IT company based in US.
Coming back to PMPML, given the commuting pattern and location of IT park,
it is too much to expect from PMPML to do anything.
They can just focus on PMC and PCMC area and explore the idea of creating a
connection hub (if they are such place) that would connect company
contacted bus "route network" with PMPML network. Again this could be "too
advanced" for management.
Also related issue is that of roads, given no. of employees (around
100,000) and assuming 50% trips by public/shared mode, is there sufficient
no. of roads connecting the IT park with Pune region? Perhaps no. This is
how we Pune treats IT companies, even when every other Industry in Pune
(Education, Real estate, Restaurants) is driven by jobs in IT industry. I
won't be surprised if growth slows down, which would be a natural thing to
happen.
