Sambhaji Bridge Pune – Trap for 2 Wheeler by Traffic Police

There is bridge in Pune named “Sambhaji Bridge” joining Alka Talkies
corner with Deccan Corner. Traffic department has made rule that only
4 wheeler would be allowed from 9 AM to 9 PM on this bridge.

But many ignorant 2 wheeler drivers who miss the board (I am not sure
if any such board exists) about 2 wheeler not allowed pass through
this bridge from Alka corner to get caught by Traffic police.

Now the real game by Traffic police begins. They first of all don’t
stop 2 wheeler travelers entering bridge, but promptly catch such
travelers on Deccan corner side. Then they take away driving license.
And ask us to go to Jangli Maharaj Raod and pay the Rs 200 fine as
they don’t possess Receipt book. I don’t understand why the hell they
don’t have receipt book for fine collected. Now many people hurry for
work insist that they can’t go to J M Road Traffic dept office. So Cop
has solution for this. He asks Rs 100 (which is BRIBE!) and let us go
with our driving license.

Pune’s traffic department must make aware all 2 wheeler travelers that
the Sambhaji Bridge is only for 4 Wheeler by putting big sign board on
both sides of bridge. And they must also explain that why Traffic
police officer don’t carry Receipt for fine collected.

There are boards on both side of the bridge. And this rule has been in place for many years. So there is really no excuse for not following the rule.

The fine amount is measly and actually the process to pay the fine is too simple. People should be made to spend 4 hours or more doing social service instead of being charged a fine.

If you're just asked not to take the bridge, you won't remember it. If you have to go through the hassle, you won't make the same mistake again. That is intention of any traffic fine anyway.

I agree that sign-boards may have been put on both sides on bridge, yet almost 20-25 bikes along with me crossed that bridge on that day. So clearly that board is not intended to be visible.

I am also not complaining against "fine". But I am complaining against attitude of Traffic cop (hawaldar) who was standing to collect "fine", but didnt carry receipt book. When I discussed this matter with my friends, most of them said that Hawaldar over there doesn't carry receipt book and instead ask to pay bribe even if people are willing to pay fine!

That is main purpose to write this post in PTTF group.

By the way, the bribe is typically first offered by the traffic violator. If the violator is willing to surrender his license and take the L-Tem receipt - which every hawaldar has - there is not question of any bribe. But people don't want to surrender the license and they don't want to take a detour to pay the fine. And this when there's a 15 days period to pay the fine. Just the other day, I was standing with the cops at the Paud Phata signal and a lady in a car broke the U-turn signal. She didn't have money with her, but didn't want to surrender the license and spent 15 minutes arguing that she was in a hurry to go to a hospital! She wanted to borrow money from someone and pay the fine AFTER the cop had prepared the L-Tem receipt. She wasn't willing to cross the road and pay the fine at the Kothrud traffic division. And I am sure she complained afterwards to a bunch of folks about bad police behavior!! If I wasn't around, I am sure she'd have offered Rs 50 bribe instead of Rs 100 fine.

It takes two to tango!!
