Message from the Chesapeake Lead Robot Inspector

As you know by now, this year’s game involves a lot of changes - not only in how the game is setup and played, but how your robot needs to be constructed to pass inspection.  Below are a few of the significant items that I’d like to pass on.  These items represent only a few of the changes this year - I encourage you to read the Game Manual thoroughly.

o    Bumpers - not required.  But if you choose to include them, they will be considered part of the robot and will be included in all size and weight measurements.

o    Team Numbers - Black on a White background.  See R2 for specific size measurements and placement information.

o    Transport Configuration - Inspectors will verify that your transport configuration is within size (28” wide x 42” long x 78” tall) and weight (120 lbs) constraints.  Width and length will be checked by placing the robot in a taped box on the floor and inspectors will measure the height.  Weight will be checked as usual on our scale.

o    Pneumatics - White Clippard tanks are NOT allowed this year.

o    Withholding Allowance - up to 30 lbs of fabricated parts may be brought in unbagged DURING Load-In only.  Fabricated parts CANNOT be brought in during the remainder of the event.

If you have any questions, please feel free to shoot me an email at landin...@gmail.com - I will make every effort to get back to you as soon as I can.  Furthermore, I will be more than happy to come out to your build site and “inspect” your robot if you are interested - just let me know.  I look forward to seeing you and wish you all the best of luck in your competitions this year.

-Bill Landin-

REMINDER:  Robots must be bagged and tagged by 11:59 PM on February 17th.  No exceptions!!!

Heads Up on Grounder Encoder

The AMT103 encoder that CUI donated for distribution in FIRST Choice and is used by many FRC teams has a metal case that is electrically connected to the ground pin on its connector. Please be aware of this, as R27 requires you to electrically isolate this (and any other components) from your ROBOT’S frame – including through use of plastic fasteners used to mount the devices. The encoder is isolated from the shaft. While we’re on AMT103 encoders, please note that CUI recommends “no more than three cycles of mounting and removal of the AMT top cover base. Multiple cycles of mounting and removing the top cover can cause base fatigue over time and affect encoder performance.”

Required Driver Station Update

All teams are required to install the update to the Driver Station.  The new version is 06021500 and is available here.  This update fixes issues with DS-FMS diagnostics and connectivity.

Inspection Checklist

The new Inspection Checklist has been posted here.  Please take some time during this last weekend of build season to step through the checklist and fix any issues identified.

Award Submissions and Award Changes

Chairman's and Dean's list award submissions are due by noon on February 19th.  Those are submitted through TIMS.  Past Chairnan's award winners have provided some resources to help teams prepare their submissions.

Keep in mind that there have been some changes made to the Chairman's award judging process.  These changes were outlined in this blog and appropriate changes have been made to the Administrative Manual.

- Presentations may now be up to 7 minutes with a total of 10 minutes per team with the judges.
- There won't be any feedback form provided by the judges to the teams
- Winners will be asked to share their submission and a video of their presentation

Similar changes were made to the Dean's List award process.

- Interviews will be 7 minutes long.
- No judge feedback forms.
- Student may bring a mentor in the room to observe the interview.

REMINDER:  The Championship event for 2015 will host 600 FRC teams.  The waitlist for the event has reopened and teams are invited to register.  More details on the Championship waitlist can be found here.
