Hi PT.JUGgers,
Portugal Java User Group (PT.JUG) was founded back in 2007 as the first Java User Group in Portugal. For quite some time, it also remained the only one.
In its early days, PT.JUG organised meetups across several Portuguese cities. However, as new local groups such as Coimbra JUG and Porto JUG emerged, PT.JUG gradually shifted its focus towards Lisbon.
Then, in 2019, Lisbon JUG came along!
Although initially met with some scepticism, its arrival turned out to be great news for the community. The Java community in Lisbon was in need of fresh energy and new faces, and Lisbon JUG brought exactly that.
The people behind Lisbon JUG have been doing an amazing job bringing Java developers together, organising events, and breathing new life into the local Java scene. It's fantastic to see so much energy and enthusiasm around Java in Lisbon again!
With most PT.JUG events having taken place in Lisbon, and Lisbon JUG now doing such a great job building an active and thriving community, we feel that maintaining a separate Meetup group no longer makes much sense. And with Meetup's subscription prices continuing to increase, the decision has become even easier.
So, after many years, we've decided to close the Portugal Java User Group Meetup group.
But that doesn't mean PT.JUG is disappearing! Our other channels will remain available, including:
These are part of our community's history, and we'd love to keep them around for more than just nostalgic reasons. In fact, it would be great to see the Google Group come back to life as a place to ask questions, share knowledge, discuss Java, or simply connect with fellow developers. So don't be shy, feel free to start a conversation there!
And before we close the Meetup group, we'd also like to share a little something with you: a 20% discount on tickets for Porto Tech Hub Conference 2026, taking place on 10 November in Porto.
Visit
https://portotechhub.com/conference-2026/tickets/ and use the code
PTH2026-ki3x-PARTNERS_20. Feel free to share it with other Java communities!
Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who has been part of PT.JUG over the years, whether you attended an event, gave a talk, helped organise something, or simply followed along.
It's great to see how the Java community in Portugal continues to grow and evolve, with new people and initiatives keeping that spirit alive.
And while this particular chapter is coming to an end, I'm sure our paths will cross again at another meetup, conference, or somewhere else in the Java ecosystem.
See you around, and keep Java-ing!
