This may make me seem like a Luddite(?! :o), but at least the above version has a dependence on the CreateFile2 system-call, making it incompatible on Windows versions prior to Windows 8. Previous versions (apart from at least 12.27 an 12.26 - which crash instantly on launch - already logged, perhaps this is a less elegant thing caused by the same problem?) have run fine.

FWIW, I can't see anything on the website that mentions this - though TBF, I didn't spent a long time trawling for it.

Hi Mark, is there a specific technical constraint for Windows versions earlier than 8? From a systems and security perspective, even Windows 8 has reached end-of-life and no longer receives critical updates or supports modern APIs. In today’s environment, considering current threat models, hardware capabilities, and development tooling, I would not recommend using anything earlier than Windows 11.

Hi Jurgen,

Not as such - though the PC is quite old, so might not even be up to running more recent versions of Windows. Even if it could, I'm not sure I can justify the cost for marginal benefit. In this case, if I were required to upgrade, I'd switch to Linux.

Nonetheless, there are probably still quite a few legacy machines and operating systems out there and as I say, I don't recall seeing anything about minimum system requirements on the PTGUI website. I have no problem with there being minimum requirements, but they should at least be stated.

Hi Mark,

PTGui 13 requires Windows 10 build 18362 or later. This is mentioned
here: https://ptgui.com/features.html

The CreateFile2 dependency seems to have slipped into one of the
libraries used by PTGui internally in the later v12 updates. This is not
going to be fixed, I'm sorry. You would need to upgrade to a newer
Windows version, or stick with an older v12. You can find them in the
download archive, see 1.8:
https://ptgui.com/support.html#1_8

Kind regards,

Hi Joost!

I hadn't found the minimum requirements before (never been an issue! :o), so thanks for pointing them out to me.

I understand about the CreateFile2 dependency (I'm a software engineer 'by trade'!) - but wasn't sure if it was an 'accidental dependency' that wasn't really necessary - though apparently it is - which is fine.

Kind regards

Mark
