Hi there,

I have been using PTGUI 8.3 for some time with good results so there was no need for me to upgrade. However when I bought the GigaPan Epic Pro I've been having some trouble getting proper results so I decided to download the trial and see how it would go.

As described on the website I used the Align to grid option. However the results have been pretty poor. The 360x180 panorama consists out of 285 photos Please have a look at the example.

Any advise how to get this done properly?

Hi Paul,

Could you make the project file available (after running Align to Grid)? Just the .pts file, I don't need the images. And please let me know how many rows and columns and in what order they were shot.

Hi Joost,

Thank you for the reply. As I run the trial version of 9 (I have 8) I am not able to save the project file?

Please advise.

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Actually you can: since 9.0 the trial version can save projects as well.

I have used PTGui 9.1.3 to stitch giga pans with mixted results.  Either I am not doing something wrong or the program has difficulty with giga pans.
I have had consistantly good results with Autopano Giga.  You may want to download it and see what kind of results you get. I use PTGui for all of
my panorams and Giga for my gigapans.

My experience is similar to Gill's. PTGui is good for fisheye images
and low image count panoramas but Autopano Giga works better for giga
pans. Maybe someday we will have a single application that does well
at both.

Dear Joost,

Ok, I redid the image with the same settings. The result is strangely enough slightly different but still not close what it should be. Please find the .pts file attached.

The image consists of 285 photos -> 15 x 19 images.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thank you for the support.

Regards,
Paul

For me AutoPan Giga gives disappointing results as well. But lets please stay on the subject of getting the initial problem fixed please :)

I really need a solution for this before I invest in another program.

Cheers,
Paul

I mamanged to get what looks like it might not be too awful a result
at:

http://ge.tt/5UUfTgO/v/0

There's a large number of orphan images, and PTGui's optimizer seems
to shift them into unreasonable positions. I tried the Panorama Tools
optimizer instead and that gave more predictable results, albeit at a
snail's pace. So after a few cycles of that, I then switched to the
PTGui optimizer and that appeared more inclined to leave well alone.
The optimizer result was not very good, so maybe the panorama head
isn't set up too well. However, there's a limit to what can be done
with only the project file and no actual images.

Dear John,

I had to finish a project so had no time looking it to this. I will do so now. Thank you for explaining.

So if I get this right, there is no actuall "fool-prove" workflow in order to get it done properly? Don't get me wrong, I am not afraid, nor lazy to dig into the problem, however after seeing the first results I was literally puzzled out. :-(

Regarding the Panoramic head. I spend quite some time leveling it out. Not sure if off level was the problem. But then having that said, there are so many images that even a small offset would mess things up.

Thanks again. I will comment shortly.

Regards,
Paul

Paul, The levelling the panohead/tripod is irrelevant. It doesn't
affect the stitching accuracy. What is important is that the camera
rotates (vertically and horizontally) about a fixed point where the
entrance pupil of the lens is located. So you need to check for
parallax effects both horizontally and vertically.

Hi John,

Once again thank you for your prompt reply.

Yes exactly. However I did this (i believe quite) exact.

For a 5MkII + 50mm it should be 56mm if I'm correct. But what troubles me is that the supplied GigaPan Stitch deals with this panorama under 10 minutes where PTGui is using all system resources (my machine becomes un-usable for 15minutes and struggles to get close to the GigaPan result. Please don't get me wrong. I am not here to moan about PTGui, just looking for a solution.

Any advise on how to optimise this? Loading your file + original photos (which looks indeed MUCH better then mine) took for ever.

I am using a iMac 27" i7 3.4Ghz + 16GB RAM

Many thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I can confirm there's a bug in PTGui affecting the Align to Grid feature
for spherical panoramas. This will be fixed in the next update.

Regarding the performance issue: It's possible that PTGui is using more
RAM than is available. If you are using other memory hungry applications
such as Photoshop, quit them before stitching with PTGui. If that
doesn't help, go to Preferences - Advanced and reduce the amount of RAM
PTGui is configured to use.

Mmm okay. This make sense then. Any outlook on when there will be an update? I am still very keep in upgrading my current license.

I changed the amount of RAM PTGui can use and as a miracle it's super fast!

Now to get the hang of it and actually make a proper panorama. What bug was foudn for 360 spheres?

Thanks,
Paul

There's a bug affecting spherical panoramas set up with Align to Grid.
This may mess up the panorama after pressing Align Images. Will be fixed
in the next update (really soon now..). Be sure to select 'stretch to a
360 degree panorama' in Align to Grid, this may actually prevent the
problem from occurring.
