Hi,
when I open the RAW files from my Z8 I get this:
PT-Z8.JPG

I assume there is no support for the Z8 at this time? ON1 can open the files so the files are ok.

regards
Jochen

ON1 has said, however, they have no plans on supporting NEFX. For what it's worth...

Hi Jochen,

No I'm sorry, the Z8 doesn't seem to be supported by LibRaw. See 3.8 for
more information:

Not surprisingly, there is now Z8 support.  Rawdigger 1.4.8 stated that the support was present from 3/2024.  At the same time it also stated that there was support for the Z8 pixel shift files, NEFX.  You can view them on FastRawViewer without a problem and presumably this means that they are in the LibRaw database.  However, PTGui gives the message that they are not recognized.  Is there the possibility that this will change in the future?

Regards,

Ross.

Hi Nigel,

It may be in Rawdigger but not yet in LibRaw unfortunately. As soon as
Libraw gets updated, it will be included in PTGui.

Thanks very much for the reply Jochen.  I just looked back at the LibRaw site and saw this post:

I don't know if this changes things or not since it implies that NEFX has been in the LibRaw depository since february.

Ross.

I’m not sure about the pixel shift images, but please read 4.24:

Thanks for the response, Joost.

I read your refernce, but the NEFX files are neither HE or compressed.  Since they have been in the LibRaw list for 4-5 months, unfortunately it still does explain why PTGui does not recognize them since Jochen said that they would be  available in PTGui as soon as they were in LibRaw.  I don't know if size would be a problem since they are typically ~250Mb files.

Ross.

PTGui doesn’t recognize the .nefx extension. Could you try renaming the file to .nef? PTGui will then pass it to LibRaw.

The LibRaw release notes state this:

  • Nikon NEFX (4/8/16/32 shots in PixelShift mode merged via Nikon software)
So did you indeed pre-merge the files in Nikon’s software? I’m not familiar with this camera.

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

Hello joost,

Thanks again for the reply.  The Z8 takes 4 (or 16) images in which the sensor is moved 1 pixel for each exposure.  Supposedly this allows for more accurate colour.  It is the same principle as in other brands such as Sony.  The images are automatically merged in Nikon's NX Studio software and this generates the NEFX file.  I am not sure that it corresponds to an NEF file and do not think it would be read correctly if I tried to rename it.  Perhaps the simplest option if PTGui is not going to recognize NEFX in the near future would simply be to develop them individually into tif files and then use those in PTGui.

Regards,

Ross.

I see. Could you nevertheless help me by trying renaming the file? LibRaw doesn’t care about the extension. If it works, I’ll make PTGui recognize the nefx extension.

Hello Joost,
I renamed them with NEF rather than NEFX.  They did work and merged in PTGui for an excellent panorama.  There did not seem to be anything strange about the final image.  It did ask about two additional files in each of the NEFX images, but I do not know what they are since each  NEFX seems to be a single file.  I told PTGui to ignore them and, as I said, the panorama was fine.  So that seems to be the simplest way to proceed.  Thanks for your help and input.
Regards,
Ross.
