DJI Mavic 3, shooting configuration, align to grid

Hi All,

Im trying to make use of the align to grid feature in ptgui.

Im using a dji mavic 3 to capture 25 image 360 images.

Does anyone have the required information?

I found a graph on line supposedly showing the shooting pattern of dji drones, but the pattern is inconsistent with the input screen for "align to grid".

Don't the images get positioned automatically on loading into PTGui (using metadata in the images)?  If you have successfully stitched a set of images, you might alternatively use the project file from that as a template to position the images for similar projects.

Hi John,

When taking 360 panos I often end up with sky and water images in the set which don’t have any unique points. Ptgui does a great job of placing these most of the time,  but even then, it will not create the panorama because of orphaned images. 

I understand that using align to grid “forces” the placement even without contact points.

The presence of orphan images does not prevent you from generating the panorama.  Just go to the Create Panorama tab and click on the Create Panorama button.  What you see in the Panorama Editor window is what you will get.

Align to Grid simply assigns yaw pitch and roll values to the images to position them as required.  If you know how the images are positioned, you can directly enter the values yourself on the Image Parameters tab or copy them in from another project used as a template.  But I know that some DJI drones embed this positional information in metadata for each image, which PTGui can use to position the images very well. After simply loading in the images, does the Panorama Editor then show the images in their correct places without doing anything else?

Yes John, it does a great job of positioning the images. 

I just loaded 25 images into a new ptgui project. They were correctly aligned. I also got message that the images were analyzed but not able to match all. It then asks if I want to add control points. 

I had been clicking yes. 

So now after clicking no, and creating the pano, I get a perfect image. 

Magic. 

Even with 6 orphaned images!

Thank you for your guidance. Lots to learn here.
