Hello

I would like to have your help with the mounting of this panorama. This is a very old panorama. This is where my daughter went up for the first time on ski boards. I have to admit that there is a problem with the horizontality of my tripod which must have sunk into the snow. I cropped the part that interests me but I can't get anything straight despite my various attempts in the panorama editor. I'm thinking that there might be other options in the ptgui settings that would help but I don't know what they are today.

The ptgui project, the individual images and the rendering can be downloaded here:

Thibaud, I didn't actually do very much to the image.  The steps were:

1. Got rid of the yellow crop bars,
2  Shifted the image left to roughly centre it.
3. Drag the panorama up to make the horizon cross the centre point of the Panorama Editor window.
4. Right shift & drag the image to rotate about the centre point until the horizon is level.  Repeat until satisfied!
5. Adjust panorama angular view as required. Left shift & drag image sideways to centre it without disturbing the levelling.

John,

I finally had time to experience and learn from your comments.
I try to reproduce what you did and have discovered that right click and left clic in panorama editor do different things and indeed it helps a lot here.
Thanks again :-)

Thibaud,  Strictly speaking,  the panorama is perfectly level rather than straight.  Straight has a particular and distinct meaning within PTGui.  On the edit menu of the Panorama Editor window, there are separate options to level and straighten a panorama.  The levelling option uses the vertical and horizontal line control points assigned to the image(s) to get the horizon level and the vertical features vertical simply by shifting the whole panorama around on the spherical stitching surface.  OTOH, straightening attempts to equalize the pitch and roll settings of the images to give a nice straight rectangular outline to the panorama.  If the camera was rotated about a perfectly vertical axis, the result will also then be a levelled panorama .  This comparison will hopefully clarify the difference between the two:

John,

Very usefull remarks. If I can guess, I'm not sure exactly what tool you're talking about to do the straightening and leveling so I made a video to show what I think you may mean ( https://youtu.be/KGegOrrPeQE ). In this video I start by doing the  straightening  operation by pressing the button on the top left and then with the mouse I move to center the horizon on the cross and with the right click I then move the horizon so that it is quite leveled. This is what I woud use today to do each of the two operations of  straightening  and leveling but maybe there are others you can tell me... ?

Thibaud, The straighten and level tools I referred to are on the Edit menu of the Panorama Editor:

The straighten option is also available via the icon in the task bar, as in your video.  I was just alerting you to the two features, which do different things.  The straighten option simply uses image parameters and ignores the content of the individual images.  The level option uses vertical and horizontal line control points which you must have created yourself on suitable vertical and horizontal features.  As in your video, you can level or straighten the panorama manually.  To assist in this process, you can drag to the right the tiny triangle in the middle of the bottom edge of the Panorama Editor frame  to overlay a grid of variable size.  When you run the optimizer, the level panorama function will by default be run automatically as a final step.  However, you can instead choose to allow the optimizer to make use of the horizontal and vertical line control points in the main optimization by selecting the option "Include in single pass" on the Advanced page of the Optimizer tab. In this mode, take care to give the images freedom to move about as needed by checking appropriate y,p,r paramters.  (Unchecking y,p,r for an anchor image would prevent the levelling of the entire panorama).
