I'm looking to see a single 180º circular fisheye image displayed as an 'overhead' 3D dome (hemisphere). The viewing would then be from the inside of the dome at the 'horizon' level. Essentially, it would appear like the top half of a spherical panorama. A photograph made with the camera+fisheye pointed perfectly vertical at the zenith could then be seen again as the environment was, without distortions, and right down to the level of the cutoff of the image circle. This would allow single image panoramas of starfields, interiors and so on. This would be very efficacious for capturing environments quickly.

I have not found this projection capability in PTGui and Web searches only led down the rabbit hole of formulas and theories.

While it might be possible to project such an image as a texture to the inside of a hemisphere in a 3D program I know of no method to make interactive viewing of such a construction in a browser the way spherical panoramas can be seen. And to my thinking, since a hemisphere dome would be visually analogous to the top half of a spherical panorama, it seems that it should be doable as a variation on spherical panoramas.

Are there means available to do this?

If you're interested in another app for this you can easily open the panorama in Pano2VR and just set the viewing limits so you can't scroll below the horizon.

PTGui does not have a specific 'dome' projection. But it can output a
fisheye projection, perhaps that's usable?

See Panorama Editor -> Projection -> Circular Fisheye

If you apply a 90 degree pitch numerical transform, the zenith will be
in the center of the image. Numerical Transform can be found in the
Panorama Editor sidebar as well.
