On my first pano in PT, there are two rectangular-shaped areas in the image where it looks like these rectangles are made of smoke or rain mist coming down from the sky, and where they intersect with the foliage the foliage loses density.  This did not happen stitching this pano in Photoshop.

Hi James,

A quick guess: did you get any warning about missing control points? If
so, this might cause it. An image would be mis positioned and blended
over the other images. Go to the Control Point Assistant window (the
light bulb button in the toolbar) to see which images are lacking
control points.

If that's not the issue; could you post a screenshot so I can see what's
happening?

Kind regards,

Joost,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did get an error message saying that my pano couldn’t be done (I can’t remember the exact words) because it lacked control points.  I went to the control points panel, and it showed me two images, each with a cluster of control points.  I picked out two numbers that weren’t so bunched together, clicked on them in both images, and this time when I clicked on “create pano” or however it’s labeled, this time it went through the process and did the stitching. So I thought well, that must have worked. Keep in mind that apart from watching a few of your videos, this was my first use of the software, so I know NOTHING- I was just trying it out, hoping that I could intuit my way through it. But anyway, you can see the rectangles of “smoke” in the shot.  Hope you can see the screen shot.

thanks for any advice,

James Irelan

Hi James,

I think my guess was right; you can see that two images containing blue
sky have been blended in at the wrong place.

If you go to Tools - Control Point Assistant, this should tell you which
images have missing control points.

Click on the problematic image in the Control Point Assistant, select
one of the neighbors in the other pane and add some control points.

It looks like those images contain just pure blue sky and you might just
as well remove them from the panorama, as they don't seem to be needed.
To do so go to Source Images, right click on an image and select 'Remove'.

If you need more help, please post the project file here (File - Save
Project).

Kind regards,

James,  In situations like this, it can be very helpful to switch on the display of image numbers in the Panorama Editor window: click on the icon showing a small rectangle with "3" in it on the task bar at the top of the window.  Out-of-place images can be readily identified and (if necessary) dragged into roughly the correct position by switching into "Edit individual images" mode (second icon from the left on the task bar).  Seek further help by clicking the Help icon on the right.

So I tried to adjust control points.  Here is the result  :  )  Clearly I need to consult videos about how to do that.  The only consolation is that this image is more interesting than the original pano :  )

James, I can't begin to understand what has gone wrong with your latest result.  There was only a small problem with your original effort that would be simple to put right.  If you can reproduce the original fault and save the project file for investigation (File Save), we can quickly identify what is wrong and describe how to correct it.  Best if you can zip together the project file and images (half size jpegs would be fine) and upload somewhere - e.g. Dropbox or the free service at wetransfer.com.  Post a link to the zip file here.

John,
I can certainly try- if you could explain it to me like I'm a four year old exactly what you want me to send.  Should I resize all the original shots, and send those?  They were from a Sony A7rV, so they're 61mb images each,  and three rows, so probably 30 of them.  When I stitched them in Photoshop, they took a while, probably 10 min or so.  I had read that PT is faster, but this second time that produced the screwball image it was definitely not faster.  I thought that since something was screwed up with the control points that maybe the app had to do lengthy computations, but then I don't really know how the software works, so that's just a guess.  Maybe the file sizes alone slowed it down- it certainly didn't seem fast to me, but then I'm not sure what to expect.

Hi James,

If you don't mind uploading 2GB, could you upload the original shots?
Otherwise please convert them to jpg to reduce the size. You can share
the files using dropbox, wetransfer.com, Google Drive or a similar service.

I'm sure the problem is easy to solve (it's just two images without
control points) but it's much easier to guide you if I have the images
in front of me.

Joost,

I found an app, Keka, which compresses the 7.4GB folder of images down to three 2GB zip files. I opened the wetransfer app, entered everything, but 2 problems occurred:  1. the app wants an email address, not a URL, and 2. when I try to link the files instead,, first I'm not sure I'm doing that right, but also I keep getting an error that says that I haven't entered any files yet.  But I have.  I've browsed to them, chosen them, and I've dragged and dropped them, and wetransfer doesn't see them.  And I tried attaching them here, but they're way too big.  So if you have any clues on how to send them to you, I've got these three 2GB zip files ready to go.

James, In wetransfer, click on Add Files and when you have navigated and selected the files, click Open., then click on the three dots icon on the right near the bottom of the panel and select Create link.  Then click the big blue get a link button.  When the zip file has been created, you are given the link to copy to the clipboard, which can be pasted into your post.  There's a size limit of 3GB for free use.

John,
Ok, trying to send the three zip files was the problem- too big.  So I was able to send two of them, but that got me to the 3GB limit, so it won't let me send any more for three days for free- or I could sign up for the Ultimate plan, $25/month, which I don't want to have to do.  I don't know how the software split up the image files, or whether the two files can be used, but that's the best I can do for now, apparently.

Hi James,

You're right, 7.4 GB is too much to transfer easily so this is not going
to work.

Could you give the stitching another try? Please try this:

Start PTGui
Load your images
Press Align Images

Now I assume you again see something like the original issue, with the
blueish rectangles?

Go to the Panorama Editor window (press Cmd+E)

Switch the Panorama Editor to "Edit Individual Images" mode. This is the
second button from the left in the toolbar in the panorama editor. You
can hover the mouse over the button to see tooltips.

Now you should see the unblended panorama, and the misplaced images can
be clearly identified. Drag them into the appropriate position.

Then, switch back to Edit Panorama button (the third button in the toolbar).

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

You could use https://www.swisstransfer.com/ to send large files, it’s free.

I still don't have control points figured out yet- couldn't correct the pano, but I did manage to shoot a new pano and try a couple of things that worked.  I tried sending it using wetransfer, and it looks like it went somewhere.  Not necessarily here, it looks like.  Maybe you'll get it; who knows.

Oh, I guess I shot my wad on the previous sends, so you won't get the one I just sent.  Too bad.  It was an award-winning shot of my back yard.

James, What we suggested was uploading your files to wetransfer, and then copying a download link for the files that you uploaded.  You simply quote the download link in a post here.  The files themselves stay where they are as they are too big to email.  You can still get the download links of files that you uploaded by visiting wetransfer.com and clicking on "Transfers", which shows the history of your transfers.

Do this quick as the links expire in 3 days (I think).
