Invalid Vector Subscript error

Using the PTGUI tutorial images IMG_4646.jpg - IMG4651.jpg, I get an Invalid Vector Subscript at the final Create Panorama stage when stitching on the GPU.  The error is usually  - but not always - repeatable with the same set of images;  on occasion the stitch will complete without error. The panorama displays correctly in the Panorama Editor and Preview windows, and also stitches correctly on the CPU.

The GPU is an Nvidia Quadro P4000 with the latest drivers R525 U4 (528.24), running on  Windows 11 on a new i9-13900 build on an Asus z790 motherboard.

The images from tutorial 2 stitch correctly on the GPU every time. I am still in the final stages of setting up this new PC build so haven't yet had chance to explore the issue in more depth, but I wonder if anyone has seen anything similar?

Thanks in advance for any confirmation or suggestions.

Hi Malcolm,

Are you using version 12.19? There was a similar problem some time ago
but this has been fixed in the mean time.

If the problem happens in 12.19, could you save the project file so I
have a way to reproduce the problem?

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

Hi Joost,

Thanks for your quick reply. Sorry, the version is indeed 12.19 - I had intended to include that information with my original post.

Project file attached from a failed run as requested. This was a simple 'Load images, Align images, Create panorama' workflow, with no other adjustments or optimisations. I haven't had any similar issues previously with the same GPU on the old machine, so I am wondering if it may be due to the latest Nvidia drivers which I updated when I transferred the GPU over. There was an unusually short interval between the last two Nvidia driver releases, presumably due to the listed bugfixes in the latest version.

Best,

Malcolm

Yes the nvidia driver could well be the issue. I will try to reproduce
the problem.

If you try an older GPU driver please let me know if this fixes the issue.

I have reverted to the previous major Nvidia version 515 U6 (517.88) dated 20 December 2022 (= 2 versions back). The Invalid Vector Subscript error is still present when stitching from the previous saved projects, but in limited testing so far it now appears to stitch correctly every time when importing the same images into a new project.

Does that help?

Thank you.

Can't speak to the issue, but I did receive a notice yesterday from NVIDIA of a new driver, which I installed for my GPU. This morning I looked and saw they have an update that might help you:

Thanks for the suggestion Kelly, but I have just tried that latest version (528.49) and it has the identical issue to v528.24. The last working version seems to be v517.88 as far as I have been able to test, but I generally like to keep up to date with drivers where possible to take advantage of any optimisations and bugfixes so it's a bit frustrating..

On further testing with larger images (3-off @ 260MB, 16-bit),  PTGUI is crashing with the Invalid Vector Subscript error as above on clean installs of both the v528.49 and v517.88 NVidia drivers. Small jpegs (the PTGUI tutorial2 set) stitch successfully. The system has 64GB RAM, so it is unlikely to be a memory problem unless there is an undiagnosed issue with one of the memory sticks. In any case, the same source images had previously stitched successfully on the old system with only 12GB RAM. For what it's worth, this is a linear stitch of some flat artwork using a shift lens, but this type of stitch has always worked previously without any problems.

I haven't had time to look into this but I will try to reproduce the
issue with a (different) Quadro card I have lying around.

But it seems to be limited to your specific card or perhaps the P4000
with specific driver versions, I haven't received any other reports.

An 'invalid vector subscript error' can occur if the GPU somehow
generates corrupted data, which then causes unexpected errors when this
is further processed on the CPU. It could be caused by many things,
including driver bugs, bad GPU RAM, power issues, or a bug in PTGui.

Kind regards,

Thanks, Joost,

It's unlikely to be a problem with the specific card itself, I would have thought, as that same GPU had been running perfectly in the previous machine and with the same 12.19 release of PTGui. According to Nvidia's driver release schedule I'm virtually certain that the driver then in use would have been v528.02 with a release date of 5 Jan; the card was transferred over to the new build in the last week or so of January and then updated with v528.24 a few days later, which is when the issue first became apparent.

I will double-check the auxiliary power connection to the P4000 meanwhile, but again think that is very unlikely to be the cause as it appears to be running perfectly with Capture One, which relies heavily on the GPU. The PSU is a new Seasonic Prime 850TX, so there shouldn't be any issue with the power overall, and the new build seems to be entirely stable with a variety of other software both in normal use and under load.

The fact that PTGui stitches without any problem on the CPU would also tend to suggest that there is no issue with the PC or its configuration as a whole.

Otherwise I wonder if it could be perhaps some adverse interaction between the combination of Windows 11, the Nvidia driver(s) and PTGui?

Hope that might be of some further help.

Best,

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,

Turns out my Quadro is a 4000 (not a P4000) and no longer supported
under Windows 11.

I've tried 3 other nvidia GPUs but can't reproduce the problem (and it
would surely have already been reported otherwise). I'll keep an eye
open for the problem, but I can't solve it currently, I'm sorry.

Hi Joost,

Thanks for the update. I appreciate the difficulty, particularly as the issue appears to be somewhat intermittent; several times I thought I had identified a common factor and found a workaround, only for the crash to recur on further identical runs with the same images.

I will try going back several generations further with the Nvidia drivers to see if that makes any difference, and will update you if I find a positive conclusion or any other solution. Fortunately the i9-13900K is fast enough not to impose an intolerable penalty when stitching on the CPU, at least for the type of stitches that I routinely do, but it would be nice to have the GPU working correctly if possible.

Best,

Malcolm

If it's of any further help in diagnosing the issue, the error appears possibly to be related to the panorama output size. By a process of iteration I have determined that setting this to around 70% of optimum output size for the large test images I have been using, in this case an output size of itro 41MP/5500px x 7450px, appears to allow the panorama to stitch successfully on the GPU. At above this size it reliably fails, and below that it seems to stitch successfully on repeated attempts, though I can't confirm where the precise limit lies nor whether that limit is fully stable. It doesn't seem to make any significant difference whether the panorama is saved as 8-bit or 16-bit, nor whether compression is used.

Does that suggest any further avenues for investigation? The Quadro P4000 has 8GB VRAM.

For what it's worth, I took the NVidia drivers back as far as v514.08, but that didn't make any difference.

Thank you.

Hi Joost,

I'm still struggling to get to the bottom of this. I thought I might have identified a possible contributing factor after changing the Windows Power Plan from Power Saver to Balanced, following which PTGui stitched the same set of large test files repeatedly for 3 or 4 days without issue, but it has since started crashing again, although it will sometimes still randomly stitch to completion. I'm pretty sure there have been no further changes between the brief interlude of successful stitching and the subsequent recurrence of the Invalid Vector Subscript crashes.

For what it's worth, the same files stitch without any problems on the 19 iGPU, even though PTGui warns this is unsupported.

Is there anything out of the ordinary that PTGui uses on the GPU for stitching? The above would appear to point to the P4000 as a factor, yet I have run a variety of other GPU-intensive software (Topaz Photo/Sharpen/DeNoise/Gigapixel AI and Mediachance AI Photo Enhancer) on this GPU, all without any obvious problems, which seems to suggest that it is otherwise working correctly in this PC.

Any further suggestions from anyone that might point me in another direction for exploration would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Malcolm

Further to the above, I've just had a PTGui Errors window pop up (for the first time) with the following error:

OpenCL error: CL_INVALID_COMMAND_QUEUE (-36) in function clFinish

The stitch froze at that point without the usual Invalid Vector Subscript notification.

Is that of any further diagnostic help?

I think that's another symptom of the same problem. If this error pops
up, it is usually due to the graphics driver being killed and restarted
by Windows. Usually this is the result of some kind of data corruption.
I don't know why this would happen though. If you still have the old pc
(where it worked), perhaps you could try placing the GPU back?

Kind regards,

PTGui uses OpenCL.

Most other applications will use either Direct3D, OpenGL (not openCL) or
Vulkan.

Hi Joost,

I'm still wrestling with this, I'm afraid; the crashes are frustratingly random, which has so far made it impossible to isolate a potential cause with any degree of confidence.

For what it's worth, Capture One also suffers from similarly random nvlddmkm driver crashes when exporting files via the GPU on this new Windows 11 build, although as far as I can determine no OpenGL apps at all and no other OpenCL apps are affected.

I have tried running the Geekbench 6 OpenCL GPU benchmark which generally seems to perform as expected, though that too threw up a couple of randomly anomalous results over the course of a number of runs. It's far from clear whether the issue may be hardware or software related, nor how to easily distinguish between the two.

I have found the following entries corresponding to the crashes in Event Viewer, though they appear to vary between events. Do any of these offer further clues to a possible cause? I wonder particularly about the Physical Multiple Warp Errors and possibly the MISSING_MACRO_DATA errors as noted below:

The description for Event ID 13 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Followed by, variously:

\Device\Video3
Graphics SM Global Exception on (GPC 0, TPC 0): Physical Multiple Warp Errors

-OR-

\Device\Video3
Graphics Exception: ESR 0x504648=0xa10000d 0x504650=0x4 0x504644=0xd3eff2 0x50464c=0x17f

-OR-

\Device\Video3
Graphics SM Warp Exception on (GPC 0, TPC 1): Out Of Range Register

-OR-

\Device\Video3
Graphics SM Global Exception on (GPC 0, TPC 1): Physical Multiple Warp Errors

-OR-

\Device\Video3
Graphics Exception:  MISSING_MACRO_DATA

-OR-

\Device\Video3
Graphics Exception: ESR 0x404490=0x80000001

Another Nvida driver release is probably due shortly, so I'm holding out for the moment to see if that improves matters, otherwise I'm looking at a possible full Windows reinstallation and/or physical teardown and rebuild of the  PC to check for any defects as a last resort, though neither is an appealing prospect.

Any further suggestions or comments re. the above Event Viewer entries would be very welcome.

Many thanks,

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,

If you ask me, I'd guess it's a hardware problem, causing random bit
flips. This can lead to all kinds of error messages.

Problem could be in the GPU, in the power supply or even in the
motherboard (PCIe communication). For a start I would try swapping the
GPU and see if that solves the problem. A cheap recent nvidia geforce
card will probably outperform the P4000.

But you could also try asking in the nvidia support forums
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/forums/
and find out if there's a known problem.
