it could be either using jpgs as a source material (try 16 bit tiffs
instead), or possibly a rendering bug for 32bit (HDR) (but I thought
joost fixed that already).

Source material is 8bit Tiff- Exposure Fusion in Photomatix Pro (jpg file was just for upload to illustrate the problem) & I'm working on PTgui Ver 8.0.2. for stiching.

try enfusegui with your 16bit source tiles, and then drop the enfused
tiles into ptgui, and render to 16 bit tiff/psd/psb... only drop down
to 8 bit at the very last moment in photoshop. 8 bit doesn't hold
enough info in the blue channel for sky gradients.

Update to the most recent version. There where some banding related bugs
fixed meanwhile. See http://www.ptgui.com/versionhistory.html for details.

Thanks Erik.Just updated to the latest version of PTGui.
The problem was in the Exposure Fusion of Photomatix Pro - tried the enfusegui as  suggested by Joergen & the sky was clean :)            - used the same 8bit source files at default enfusegui settings.
Where does one figure out the enfusegui controls - any tutorials ?

enfusegui ist just a GUI for the enfuse command line tool. Perhaps you
get some more information on http://wiki.panotools.org/Enfuse

The full documentation of the most recent enfuse version is on
http://panorama.dyndns.org/EandE-documentation/
