I just tried with an arbitrary panorama I had in the Recent Project list
and it worked perfectly. My script looks much like yours:

I used original PTStitcher with "Panorama Tools" blender from inside
PTGui. The same project with PTStitcher and smartblend gives a very
nicely blended panorama ;-) The only difference is, that PTGui correctly
uses n"TIFF_m" instead of n"TIFF" in the p line in order to create
single images which then are passed to smartblend. With n"TIFF" option
PTStitcher does the blending...
