Hello all,

I have a few questions with the following setup: Laowa 12 mm with sony A7III

1.  This lens is not yet recognized by PTGUI pro in the lens database, could this be added?
if not does anyone here use the same setup ? and what are your lens settings within PTGUI?

2.  Does anyone have tips on shooting inside shots?  as when stitching the indoor panoramas , the ceiling always provides problems and is not as sharp as outdoor shots.
Stitching the ceiling is sometimes impossible without any flaws.

3.  Within PTGUI I do not see the imported images as fish eye images , but they are straightened when imported. How does one fix this issue?

thanks in advance for any help provided

regards
Ferran

Hi Ferran,

The Laowa 12mm is a regular rectilinear lens, not a fisheye lens. PTGui
has built in lens profiles for many fisheye lenses, but for rectilinear
lenses this is not necessary as they all have roughly the same projection.

So just use 12mm rectilinear for the lens settings.

Regarding the ceiling, I can only guess but this might be a focus issue.
If you shoot at a wide aperture (say, f/2.8), only subjects at a
specific distance will be in focus. If you would use a narrower
aperture, the depth of field increases and everything will be more
sharp. If this might be the problem, try shooting at f/11 or f/16 aperture.

Also see:

If that's not the issue, just make your images available and I'll take a
look.

Kind regards,

Ferran, The stitching problems at the zenith might be due to the setup of the panorama head or image orientation issues.  Aligning the images at the zenith is not really any different to the nadir area and if necessary, viewpoint correction might offer a solution to the alignment problems there.  If the sample panoramas that you offer include one with zenith problems, I would be interested to take a look and will request access permission.

Hi Ferran,

I've attached my project file. I had to place a few control points on
the ceiling and I've masked out the tripod.

Your images are only 1152x2048, this give a low resolution panorama. The
unsharpness is difficult to judge, but I think it's indeed a focus
issue, see my previous remark. Try shooting at a smaller aperture.

The 12mm rectilinear lens works, but it is not ideal for spherical
panoramas.

Stitching will be much easier if you use a 10 or 12 mm fisheye. For
example the 7 Artisans 10mm F2.8 fisheye. With such a lens, the images
have a wider field of view, so the zenith picture will not contain just
the ceiling but more of the surrounding walls. This will make it much
easier to find control points and PTGui will usually be able to stitch
the images automatically.

Kind regards,
