Hi:
I am looking for a detailed tutorial on the workflow for stitching 360 degree panoramas imported from Litchi using a Phantom 4 Pro.  In the past, I have always used Auto Pano Giga and the stitching has been almost perfect every time, but with PTGUi there always errors which have to be fixed and I am not very good at fixing them. So, maybe  I am doing something wrong. I normally take 28 images in columns and used AEB 3 bracket. I made an HDR out of these in Aurora 2019, manually, then bring them into PTGUI

Hi,

In general there's nothing special with Phantom 4 pro images; you can
stitch them like any other panorama by loading the images into PTGui and
pressing Align Images.

Often with drone images, parallax is a problem due to movement of the
drone. One way to cope with parallax is to place control points mostly
on the horizon (at the expense of misalignments on nearby buildings). Or
you can use viewpoint correction on all images except one (requires
PTGui Pro). This will improve overall alignment but may result in
slanted buildings nearby.

If you need more help just make a set of images available for download.

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

okay, I will take you up on your offer. I have uploaded 28 TIFFs to Google Drive . Sorry I should have zipped this.

One thing to notice is that the mast of one of the sailboats is off at the top. Another is that the horizon seems warped. PTGUI reports a whole bunch of images that it needs more links for…like half the pano!  Isn’t that a bit much?  So, obviously something is wrong and I’d like to know what I need to do to get a good pano each time without these errors. There was little wind during the shoot, so the drone didn’t move that much. The APG file is included in a separate folder if you are able to make a comparison.

Thanks
Tim

Watery scenes are not easy to stitch.  My result isn't perfect - the nadir area could do with more attention.  The PTGui project file is attached and if loaded into the same folder as the images, can be used to generate the full size panorama.

Thank so much for looking at this, I expected to be yelled at for uploading all those .tifs! Anyway, your sitich is so much better than mine! The horizon is perfect! What did you do to achieve this? Tim

When faced with images almost certainly having severe parallax issues, I find the best course of action is to establish a solid framework consisting of just the horizontal row of images containing the horizon.  Because the horizon is so far away as to be relatively unaffected by parallax, you can place/generate control points ONLY along the most distant parts of the horizon in that row and align the images perfectly - at the horizon. After levelling to get the horizon straight and flat, the images in that row can then be fixed in position by unchecking their yaw, pitch and roll parameters on the Advanced page of the optimizer tab in PTGui so that they will not move in subsequent runs of the optimizer.  All the other images are then aligned with the horizon row, and any misalignment problems dealt with one way or another.  The images in the top row above the horizon can be aligned with the horizon row images with control points again only on the distant horizon. You don't want points on the clouds since they move significantly between shots.  The shots below the horizon row can have viewpoint correction applied, which usually helps somewhat in aligning them, but masking is needed (or the use of a smart blender) is needed to eliminate glitches.  Of course, some corrections can be easily made in Photoshop too, so there are no hard and fast rules as to what to do exactly.

(Sorry that a half complete version of this was accidently sent and immediately deleted).

So, what are the first steps…import the images and then start working on the horizon. Do I get PTGUI to do anything first? Should the images be in the exact order they were taken? Should I opt for rows or columns when taking the images with Litchi?
