My .CR3 images are importing all washed out, and it's not recognizing the camera in the database.

This camera has been out for some time now. Any updates to support it coming soon? Or a fix or how I should proceed?

Thanks.

I use the Adobe free converter to change it to DNG, or even better to TIFF so PTGui and most other software can understand.

That's what I'm trying now, Adobe Photoshop's Image Processing to LZW compressed TIFF. But now it's an added step to the workflow. :(

Hi,

Are you using PTGui 11 or 12? PTGui 12 beta includes the latest LibRaw
update which might support your camera:

But a step that's well worth it. PTGui raw conversion can not compete
with a dedicated raw converter. In fact you loose most of the benefits
of raw shooting if you use raw directly in PTGui.

Hi Joost,

I just tried it on beta, still no go (see screenshot).

Thank you.

My workflow has always and always will be to preprocess the images with Camera RAW before stitching. As Erik Krause stated there are many advantages to preprocessing in Camera Raw. I export as TIFF but never allow compression. I have a Youtube video on processing a focus stacked panorama. Included in this video I do a demonstration of my preprocessing methods using Camera RAW.

Most of my tours consists of hundreds, if not thousands of (bracketed) shots. To run them all through even a batch processing job could add many hours (and hundreds of gigs) to a project. I've been processing the Raws direct from PTGUI for a long time now - so this new added step is a big deal for me unfortunately.

PTGui relies on LibRaw for raw decoding, it appears that it doesn't
support your camera yet.

That LibRaw snapshot is supposed to be included in PTGui 12 beta 15. So
it doesn't work?

Could you make one of your CR3 files available for download?

Hi Joost,

I have it shared with you here:

28 images in total (4 x 7 bracketed).

Thank you.

Hi,

It seems that by mistake the Windows version of PTGui 12 beta 15 was
still built against the previous LibRaw release. The mac version can
open your file.

This will be fixed in the next update!

Using tiff instead of raw images does give a better quality image, as my comparison photo suggests (tiff on the right), but why do you use the 8-15mm lens at 8mm?  It wastes half the pixels on black space.  12mm or thereabouts will make better use of the available pixels and you can still manage well enough with 4 shots around.

Hi,

You need to download Canon's  "digital Photo Professional" to convert them to TIFF. Takes up to 3 minutes per image, so I make a batch to run overnight.

Did you ever consider using camera jpeg in this case? Depending on your
camera they might have better quality than libraw converted raws and
proper HDR processing might even out some of the shortcomings of jpeg.

It used to be worse, but I think using raws in PTGui 12 is not that bad
anymore Erik. The main drawbacks are the lack of CA correction and noise
reduction.

Of course you'll get much more adjustment options in a dedicated raw
converter, but many of those adjustments will actually cause problems
when stitching or assembling HDR. Especially in the past few years, raw
converters seem to have evolved to match the image look people are used
to from iphones and such, with its always-on tone mapping. The results
look great but if you load those images into PTGui and switch to
unblended view, you'll see that each image is developed differently and
this makes blending them more difficult.

Raws are nearly perfectly linear, which is perfect for PTGui to do
vignetting correction, blending and HDR merging. It may be better to do
any desired adjustments after stitching.

JPEG is far from ideal because it's limited to 8 bits, causing banding
issues and it suffers from compression artifacts. Raws are 12 or 14 bit
uncompressed.

I'm not saying PTGui will do as good a job as ACR, definitely not! But
I'd say it's pretty usable if you don't want to spend time tweaking in a
raw converter. It really depends on your goals.

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

That's why I wrote depending on the camera. Some cameras apply a
build-in lens profile when saving jpegs removing CA, and most do noise
reduction. Removal of hot or dead pixels might also be done in camera,
but not for raw.

As for jpeg banding: this is likely averaged out in HDR, depending on
the merge processing of course. Source image dynamic range should be of
little importance shooting HDR. And camera jpegs are surprisingly good
these days.

That does look much sharper. Interesting...

I've always done it at 8mm for plenty of overlap. Just did one at 12mm and there seems to be sufficient overlap too. I'll do that going forward. Thanks!

Joost,

I am likewise looking to use the LibRaw 202101 support for iPhone 12 Pro Max (AppleRaw). I am on MacOS, and using PTGui12, but cannot find the 12 beta 15 that you mentioned.

Can you point me in the right direction. Thanks!

You can download PTGui 12.0 here:

It's newer than the beta, and includes the latest libraw. I'm not sure
if AppleRaw is supported though.
