The new Cube Face generator is nice but the naming is wrong.
I know no viewers using front back etc.
The default both for FPP and KRPano is _f.jpg, _r.jpg, _b.jpg, _l.jpg,
_u.jpg, _d.jpg.

Renaming 20 batched panoramas is not funny.

Another thing. There is no info what Interpolator is used.
Can it be controlled?

Hi Hans,

I'll change the naming in the next update. The interpolator is currently
fixed to Bicubic Normal, which gives the most neutral result in terms of
sharpening.

Thanks, that sounds good. Bicubic normal is also what I use and
recommend.

Regarding FPP you can decide which naming convention you want to use by
choosing among the various panoXX.swf files (pano0.swf etc.),
see documentation. I for instance always work with cube_0, cube_1 etc.

Agreed. But you can also add one single line in the specific FPP XML
instead of renaming the cubes:

panoSuffixes=_0.jpg|_1.jpg|_2.jpg|_3.jpg|_4.jpg|_5.jpg

Hope that helps. Regards, Philipp

Yes but those 3 are not currently an option for PTGui. The only option
now is the front.jpg, back.jpg etc and that option is not an option
for the viewers without special xml writing.
Of course the best would be that you could set your favorite as
default in PTGui in the pref.
There are also many people who use FPP without XML and they have to
use one of the 3 common.

Pano2VR does not have that either which is very irritating as it
returns all settings to the same each time you import your image.

There is a batch rename tool in XnView.

And in AcDSee too, probably in other viewer/databases as well, and even in windows itself
it's quite possible using bat files.
And then here are a lot of free renamer tools available, like Ant Renamer:

There is also one in my iView Media Pro but you have to remember you
have to do it 6 times.
And why should you do it when it is so easy to provide the correct
names in first place.

I guess 80% of the FPP users use the default _f.jpg, _r.jpg, _b.jpg,
_l.jpg,

I use Pano2VR for my cube <-> equirectangular conversion.

It uses panoname_cube_{0...5}.{jpb,tif} as it's naming
convention. I don't think that there is a correct way to name
the cubes. There seems to be a bunch of different ways depending
on which tools you use. So if PTGui was really going to be complete
in the way if lets you name, it would let the user provide a template for
naming.

I agree. PTgui could need some more options for such things, as well as optional filename
prefix in addition to postfix.
But if you already have a bunch of files that need renaming it's nice to know that there
are tools that can do the job easily :)

I have not weighed in on this because... well it's not that big of a deal to me.  But I have to say that you should not assume that just because something is not done the way you do (or want) it, that it is incorrect. My custom viewer as well as others that I have seen use the full words as PTGUI has it. Pano2VR offers a list of choices including the current PTGUI format. So to insinuate it is somehow incorrect is a fairly narrow view of the world.

IMO, a choice would absolutely be the best. But if I had to choose between that and Joost working on his next genius enhancement of the functionality there is no doubt I'd rather he was not bogged down in this kind of obviously religious debate.

BTW, an EXCELLENT product as always Joost! I always look forward to your updates. PTGUI is an absolute JOY to use!

Really Bill

This has nothing to do with "religious debate"
It is just simple knowledge about what the viewers use as default.

In reality we are just talking about 2 viewers FPP and KRpano and as I
already said the default naming is _f.jpg, _r.jpg, _b.jpg, etc.
followed by custom extra xml using _0.jpg, _1.jpg, or _1.jpg,
_2.jpg

What a custom viewer created by someone is in this case just without
interest.

Probably it's not too difficult to find a bash or perl line to rename
those files.
I used to have some somewhere.

Yep. On the Mac, as well as various third-party
solutions, the Automator utility (found in the
Applications folder) can be used to do this sort
of thing easily and effectively.

>I'd rather he was not bogged down in this kind of obviously religious debate.

The core discussion is not really 'religious', although sure, it
could possibly stray into that kind of thing. It is a very good point
that there is no one 'correct' way of naming these things. It is,
however, worth remembering that different tools do require different
naming conventions, and that manual renaming is the sort of 'bump in
the road' thing that can really niggle at people. The _f, _d suffix
is standard in two of the best-known Flash players. I don't know what
user percentage that is, but it won't be small.

I totally agree that a choice would be best. Rather than worrying
about letting users provide templates I think a simple popup menu
choice list is all that's needed. Looking at Pano2VR's set the likely
options seem fairly simple:

Characters (f..d)
Numeric (starting from 0 or from 1?)
Words (_down or _bottom?)

Teamed with the File > Make Default feature, and PTGui can be all
things to all people. More or less. :-)

>BTW, an EXCELLENT product as always Joost!

Absolutely. Such a powerful and impressive tool.

Flashificator (gui for Flash Panorama Player) supports the use of
following cube face suffixes:

1. _f.jpg _r.jpg _b.jpg _l.jpg _u.jpg _d.jpg
2. _0.jpg _1.jpg _2.jpg _3.jpg _4.jpg _5.jpg
3. _1.jpg _2.jpg _3.jpg _4.jpg _5.jpg _6.jpg

4. _11.jpg _22.jpg _33.jpg _44.jpg _55.jpg _66.jpg
5. _bk.jpg _dn.jpg _ft.jpg _lf.jpg _rt.jpg _up.jpg
6 .back.jpg .bottom.jpg .front.jpg .left.jpg .right.jpg .top.jpg

The 3 first are standard for FPP, the other 3, when fed into
Flashificator,
will be automatically converted to the _f.jpg _r.jpg _b.jpg _l.jpg
_u.jpg _d.jpg suffix system.

If we are informed of more (or less) common suffixes, it would be a
natural thing for us to provide support for those as well.

Problem is that there are just as many ways to use the front etc
suffix as there are converters.

Ptgui uses .front.jpg
Cubicconverter uses -front.jpg
Pano2VR uses just front.jpg

Actually FPP can be easy be set to use any of them .
You just ad the parameter panoSuffixes to the xml
Like this
panoSuffixes=.front.jpg|.right.jpg|.back.jpg|.left.jpg|.top.jpg|.bottom.jpg

The character | is alt-i which might be something you never used. I at
least had to do some research to find it.

The | sign isn't allways on the shift+i, it depends on the keyboard
layout setting, in the Portuguese layout we have a dedicated key for
it. It's shift+\ (usually upper left corner).

I suspected that. The worst is that it is very difficult to see the
difference between an l and the | with some fonts, with Helvetica and
Geneva they are identical.
