Maybe I'm too stupid to remember which movement means Yaw and Pitch. I
have looked a hundred times in my dictionary to know which one means
up-and-down and left-and-right - and still can't remember.
Please can you add a small symbol like ↔ ↕ to help people like me,
who are not native speakers of english.
Hope this would help others too - Thank you!

Suggested mnemonic (=memory aid).

A YAWn is when your mouth opens WIDE (sideways).

A PITCH is when you throw something UP and you hope it
comes DOWN on the thing you are aiming at.

Help?

Roger W.

PS I once taught physics to 12/14-year old girls, and had to devise
lots of mnemonics to help them with unfamiliar concepts.

but a yawn means your jaws open, in an up/down motion :)

:-P

Yaw just sounds like left/right. It's got a "woody" sound.
Pitch sounds like an up/down motion.

See here for a better explanation of what I mean.

I second that ;)
My mouth goes quite narrow when yawning anyway..
I'm not so sure it is easier to remember yawn than yaw, if you're not that familiar with the English language?
Not to mention 'pitch' as throwing something.
Icons/symbols are often impossible to "read", but in this case I think they should be easy to "read".

For those who do not use KRpano I can tell that he defines pitch up as
minus values and pitch down at plus. Have to ask him why he uses
opposite as what you can find a meaning with.
First time i used it I thought it was a bug.

Bjorn is right. To non native English speakers method offered by Roger
doesn't help.
I needed to look in dictionary what is yawn ;)
But - couple funny suggestions more at here and after a good laugh you
will remember it forever.

Funny mnemonics, but actually it's far easier: On Image Parameters tab
in the down left corner you have "Fill yaw". Now the normal (classical)
panorama is horizontal and hence consists of images taken in a regular
pattern in horizontal direction. "Fill yaw" places images in such a
pattern, hence Yaw must be horizontal.

Another way to remember is the relevance: Yaw is most relevant since it
is necessary even for single row panoramas. Pitch is only needed for
multirows or special situations and roll compensates for not leveling
the camera. Anywhere in PTGui those three are ordered this way, either
left to right or down: YRP

I don't know if it helps, but 'yaw' is also commonly known as 'heading', which may be a more familiar and understandable word?
And 'bank' is commonly used for 'roll'.
YPR == HPB
Yaw/heading (horizontal) is always(?) mentioned/listed first/leftmost/topmost.
You never see pitch & yaw in that order?

Thank you all for your suggestions! Rogers method doesn't help me
directly but he
animated to look for a "memory aid" which helps. I've found one:
"Pitch" sounds very
similar to my lastname. So I ask myself: Is your name "Yaw"? - No
(left - right).
Is your name "Pitch" - Yes (up - down). :-)

Hello Ernesto!

I made a graphic for the FPP-FCC wiki article I prepared a little
while ago dealing with Tilt and Pan; the equivalent to Pitch and
Yaw ... and I have just made a second one for you! Hope you likey :)

Hello Kelly
If I still don't remember (but now I am sure I never will forget
again) I'll install your nice picture as desktop image.
Thank you!
