Alignment and Panorama Editor issues

Hello,

I've been encountering a couple of issues with PTGui's behaviour.

Before describing them I'd like to point out that I work on a non-admin desktop as this is a corporate computer but with the support of IT I have already uninstalled and re-installed PTGui in two different machines, changed the GPU settings, created a template and used Make Default using older project files... to no avail. The issues are:

1 - I can't start a new project without:

a - having alignment issues - once I ingest the images and press "Align Images" PTGui scrambles the source images and shows them all mixed together on the Panorama Editor.

b - having an error message - Assertion Failed: TnhspStreamer. ccp, line 1598

I was able to work well before. The issue started out of the blue just before we updated to Windows 11 and as we were about to do a big update across the organisation I thought it could be solved with the system upgrade, but it didn't.

BTW, if I open an older project the issue doesn't happen or if I ask another member of staff to start a new project for me, I can then carry on working fine... However, there is a second behaviour issue that carries on nevertheless - an issue with the Panorama Editor.

2 - Panorama Editor issue: I can only use it on its own and in order to edit masks or add control points I need to close it down. Also, when using the zoom feature/magnifying glass I have to close the Magnifying Glass popup window in order to close the Panorama Editor and then close it to access the Control Points and Mask menus.

Any suggestion much appreciated.

For that, we need a set of images to reproduce the issue. Use
wetransfer, dropbox or similar to provide them for download and post the
link here. If they are confidential, please request direct contact.

Joost must answer all other questions.

This may be a total red herring and I offer it just as a suggestion, but - if you are on roaming profiles (i.e. more than one user can logon to a machine and your desktop, files, etc follow you whichever machine you are on - the fact that another user can start the project successfully for you may point to some corruptied files in your account on the server.

I’ve no idea what settings PTGui stores that could produce this, only Joost could answer that question.

Hi Dani,

Please first do File - Reset Default Project settings. Changing the
defaults is usually only causing problems.

To understand what's happening, I would need to see what you mean
though. Can you show some screenshots illustrating the problem?

The Panorama Editor and Detail Viewer window can be enlarged or reduced
in size. You should be able to get all windows to be visible and usable
together. Perhaps you've clicked the 'always on top' buttons in the
panorama editor and detail viewer windows? This would prevent access to
the underlying windows. Just click the 'always on top' button again to
disable this.

Hi Joost,

Thank you for your input but unfortunately this default reset doesn't work. I did that many times before and have just done it again.

Also, I don't seem to have - unless it is hidden somewhere else - this 'always on top' buttons in the
panorama editor and detail viewer windows. I'm using the 12.27 version.

Can I have an email so I can send you the screenshots?

Hi Andrew,

Thank for your input but no, I'm not on roaming profiles. We have 3 different accounts and the other member of staff is using their own when creating the new project for me.

Hi Dani,

Thanks for the screenshots. I see 3 issues:

- As I guessed, "Always On Top" is indeed enabled in the Panorama
Editor. In your screenshot I can see the button being blue. If you hover
your mouse above the buttons, there's one labeled 'always on top'. Click
to disable this.

- The Assertion Failed error is probably caused by problems with the GPU
driver. Go to Options - Advanced and uncheck 'GPU Acceleration'. Then
restart PTGui.

- Your screenshot shows that PTGui was unable to find control points for
all images. To resolve this you will need to add some control points
manually. The control point generator was designed to be used for
photographs; it may be less effective for paintings. Watch the video

I've "found " the always on top, that should be all good now.

In regards to:

I've done this before and it didn't solve the issue.

all images. To resolve this you will need to add some control points

All was working fine before and also, that's the procedure my other colleagues are using and they are doing fine. The same applies for the GPU.

Any other ideas?

Could you send me the output of Help - System Information?

I'd be happy to try stitching your images if you could make them
available for download. But if they stitch succesfully on your
collegue's computer then I may not be able to reproduce the problem here.

Hi Dani,

You currently have GPU acceleration enabled, but if you are certain
that's not the issue, then I would need your files in order to diagnose
the issue.

Once you see the 'Assertion failed' error popping up, could you save the
project using File - Save Project and send me the project file? Perhaps
I can reproduce the issue here.

Hi Joost,

I've tried again with the GPU disabled and yeap, the same error and scrambled images.

Unfortuately, I can't save the project as it crashes.

I did manage to send the report over using this email address so hopefully you got the log.

Hi Jools,

Thank you for your suggestion but not sure how you would reproduce the issue using my images as I'm working on these very same images using the project that my colleague created for me and all is fine. Also, it happens to any set of images I use. So, it doesn't seem to me that the issue is with the images.

Did you get access to the log I send when it crashed?

Hi Dani,

Ok, I see.

Both the crash report and the Assertion Failed error indicate that PTGui
is in a state which should never occur. This could either be caused by a
bug in PTGui, or it could be caused by a hardware problem.

If the problem occurs for a specific set of images, and on multiple
computers, it would be a bug in PTGui.

But if the problem happens only on your computer, and if it happens for
any set of images, it's likely a hardware problem. I suggest doing a RAM
test.

It's not a configuration issue: the only setting that might cause
different behavior between your computer and another would be the
settings you applied using "File - Make Default". But if you have reset
them using "File - Reset Default Project Settings" (and your system
information confirms this), this cannot be an issue. Even then, it would
not cause Assertion errors or crashes, just alignment problems or
missing control points.

Amazing, thanks.

So, to clarify:

1 - It is not happening with only one set of images but any, every time start a new project.

2 - It is happening on 2 different machines - but that could still be a RAM issue as they are both not that new.

I'll run a RAM test and come back to you with some feedback.
