Hi,

I'm having a problem where PTGui won't load the images from my camera. When I go to load them in Windows explorer I see the thumbnails. But when I bring them into PTGui there are no thumbnail images in the software. And when I hit "align images" the software just hangs up and does nothing with an empty progress bar. Also my computer basically stops working. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't do anything, and while I can basically navigate Windows my web browser stops loading web pages. I have had to hard reset my computer twice while attempting this.

The camera is the same camera producing the same Canon Raw files that I have used with PTGui before. The only difference is that I upgraded to Windows 10. Could this be the problem? Does PTGui support Windows 10? It worked fine on Windows 7 with my current setup. And the OS is the only thing that has changed.

Thanks.
Angus

Angus, This doesn't appear to be a general problem, as I just ran a test on Windows 10 with raw images from a Canon 5DII and it ran fine. In fact I never stitch raw images myself, preferring to generate tiff files with chromatic aberration corrected along with any other adjustments judged to be desirable.  I suggest you do the same, but supply details of the camera used so that the fault can be investigated.

Hey John,

As I said I've done this several times with the same camera and it's raw files (Canon T2i) and I've never had any problems. Literally the only change in my setup is Windows 10. The crazy part is how the software basically cripples my whole computer. I'll give it a shot with converted files. And I'll install PTgui on my other Windows 7 workstation tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Angus

Hi Angus,

To display the thumbnails for RAW files in Explorer a plugin must be
installed. This plugin is also responsible for displaying the thumbnails
in the Add Images dialog in PTGui (the Add Images window basically is
just a Windows Explorer window).

It's possible you once have installed a plugin for this in Windows 7 but
the plugin is not working properly in Windows 10. It's the plugin which
can cause the entire Windows to hang, not PTGui.

Therefore please see if you can uninstall and possibly reinstall the plugin.

Possible options are:

Microsoft Camera Codec Pack (6.3.9721.0)
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829

Canon RAW Codec Software:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/professional/professional_cameras/softwareapp/canon_raw_codec_software

FastPictureViewer Codec Pack:
http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

Please see if you have installed one of the above, uninstall them and
reboot. You won't see raw thumbnails but the problem would hopefully be
gone.

Another possible cause might be your anti virus software interfering:
when loading raw files PTGui calls the dcraw executable, which is
responsible for loading the raw files. Perhaps your antivirus is
blocking dcraw. This doesn't explain why your computer hangs completely
but it's worth looking into.

I can confirm with 100% certainty that I am NOT using any kind of third party plugin to view Raw files in explorer. The only one I even know of is Sage Thumbs, and I haven't even tired to use that in years because it didn't work well. It is not and has never been installed on this hard drive. Apparently Windows 10 generates thumbnails for Raw files on it's own now. Before I upgraded to Windows 10 I could NOT see any kind of thumbnail for Raw files. However when I was on Windows 7 I could see the Raw images in PTGui but not in explorer. Now in Windows 10 it's the other way around, I can see them in Explorer but not PTgui. And as I've said before PTgui completely cripples my computer when I try and load the Raw files now.

So let me reiterate. There have been no significant changes to my hardware or software setup other than the switch to Windows 10. Before that PTgui was fine.

Thanks

So in addition to the fact that no third party Raw viewer plugins are present, The problem persists even with all virus protection disabled.

Hi Angus,

Please bare with me, I haven't received other reports of this problem
and I can only guess from over here.

Does it happen with large panoramas only or also with panoramas
containing just a few images?

Does the problem happen only when you load raw files or also with jpg
files? Does it happen with specific images only?

You are saying PTGui cripples your computer. Do you see problems only
when PTGui is running or also when it's not running?

Before Windows 10 I could load large numbers of CR2 Raw files from my T2i into PTgui without problems. I was generating HDR panoramas from 64 bracketed images or more without any issues. Now it won't even load a single image properly.

And no I'm not having any other issues with my computer. If I open PTgui and try to use it, it's pretty much a guarantee that I'll have to restart. The machine becomes completely useless. And CTRL ALT DEL doesn't even work...

In this case it's something in the raw process, which is partly windows
(load dialog) and partly dcraw, an external program which is called by
PTGui for the actual raw conversion. If you're familiar with the command
line you can use it directly for a test. It's found in the dcraw
subfolder of the PTGui program folder. You can even replace it by a
different version from http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/

In any case it's not advisable to use raw images directly in PTGui. You
loose almost all benefits from shooting raw, including chromatic
aberration and fringing correction, highlights and shadows recovery etc.
You might even get worse results than shooting JPEG directly.

It is far better to use a dedicated raw converter and convert to 16 bit
TIFF, in which case you can save the complete dynamic range (if done
properly). But don't do lens corrections there, PTGui does them far better.

Could you open a task manager window, showing the process list?
Then load a single raw image into PTGui.
While loading check the task manager for the PTGui.exe process and for
dcraw.exe. Could you tell me how much CPU and how much memory these
processes use?

Also could you send me one of your raw images, I'll see if I can somehow
reproduce the problem.

Obviously, not using raw files is the workaround for now. Convert them
to 16 bit tiff to retain the full dynamic range.
