Stitching images of objects on roller table

I am shooting downward at a long object that is being moved along a roller table. Each of the 9 images have 30% overlap with the adjacent image. I am not able to generate a suitable stitched image.

I have cropped the images in PT Gui to prevent unwanted control points from forming outside of the object of choice (i.e. the table supporting the rolling object is always in the image).

Can I specify the overlap? Some softwares such as MS I.C.E allo the user to specify the overlap.

Hi Michael,

Is the object flat? If not, then you cannot stitch those images due to
parallax.

If the object is flat and the camera is pointed perpendicular, you
should be able to get a good result by following 6.5:

If you can't get it to work, make your images available for download and
I'll be happy to take a look.

I had some success thanks to your instructions. But I won't be able to do this for every single series of images. I am hoping to be able to take advantage of the batch stitching.
If I can upload the images I would love it if you could see what you can do.
The images are of a drill core box. There are 8 images. The camera is above, looking down. The core box is moved along a roller table under the camera.

Despite my initial success, I wasn't able to recreate it a second time.

Hi Michael,

You could try this:

- New project
- Load your images
- Click Advanced
- Go to Lens Settings and change the focal length to 1000mm
- Go to Optimizer and change this:
uncheck 'optimize lens focal length'
- File -> Save As Template, choose a suitable name for your template.

You can use the template as follows:
Load your images
File - Apply Template, and pick your template
Align Images

For batch stitching you can use Tools - Batch Builder and select your
template there. Keep in mind that batch stitching may fail if PTGui
fails to find control points for certain images; manual intervention
would be required.

Michael, apologies, I confused your images with a set of images from
another user that I downloaded around the same time.

For your images I don't think there's a way to stitch these with PTGui
in an automated way. First of all there's depth in your subject, so you
will end up with inevitable stitching faults due to parallax errors.

Secondly PTGui by default attempts to place control points on the static
part of the scene next to the actual subject. You can avoid this by
adding masks.

But the bigger issue is that the control point generator isn't able to
find control points automatically, it just doesn't work for these grey
rock surfaces.

If you have an exact reproducing setup, you could try stitching one
project manually. Then apply it as a template for subsequent stitches
and just skip further alignment. Any difference in shooting conditions
will lead to stitching errors.

Hi Michael,

This would involve placing control points by hand on the object.

The problem is your subject is not flat. If you place control points at
different depth, there will be parallax and this will cause stitching
errors and probably a deformed stitch. Likely the resulting object will
not be straight.
