I'm trying to create an alpha channel mask in Photoshop Elements 6
(Mac). Elements calls alpha channels 'saved selections', but I can't
figure out what to do with them. I'm really hoping I don't have to
spring for CS4!

If the logic carries across from Photoshop then that may work fine.
From memory, you need to use actual saved alpha channel masks (the
things that are made by saving selections in Photoshop) rather than
layer masks, the thing most PS users are accustomed to these days.

Try opening an image from a pano set, making a large mask that would
be impossible to miss if it worked, then save as TIFF and see if the
mask carries across when you use the file in PTGui.
