Question: Which one is optically "better", the Sigma 10mm or Nikon
10.5mm? I intend to get use one of them (shaved) on fullframe. Anyone
with any *experience* (and less opinion) on how both lenses compare?
Thanks!

I know you asked for direct experience, and I'll be candid - I don't have the Sigma.
But - the Nikon 10.5 is a tremendous lens, incredibly sharp and wonderful resistance to lens flaring.
I have however compared it to several off brand 8mm and the Sigma 4.5mm.

If it helps, whatever "other brand" you might choose, check to see if it has the contacts to transmit lens data to the camera (for EXIF info).
Although only a "nuisance", I've had a few that don't - whereby you then have to manually input in PTGui.

I was wondering which you bought in the end as there still aren't direct comparisons with same camera/user (that I could find) comparing the optical quality.

Perhaps this is something that could be done at IVRPA in Prague in a few
weeks time? If someone going there has a Nikon-fit Sigma 10mm...

Did you consider the Samyang 12mm fisheye which is designed for fullframe sensor bodies?

Also sold under other brand names

Thanks Andrew. Interesting- and useful website. Nevertheless there still is the issue of no direct comparison with the Nikon 10.5mm or Sigma 10mm (with same camera). I am using a D800 and already have a 14mm so can do a pano in x8 shots, but wanted to reduce this to 4 shots for handheld or faster shoots from a tripod/monopod etc - so was going to shave the petals off the Nikon/Sigma. What's interesting is that even IF the Samyang was of slightly lesser optical quality it is designed for FF so presumably utilises more of the sensor. *Humph* more questions...

If only one company/individual would test all the fisheyes on the same FF and DX cameras and put this debate to rest (for the pixel peepers).

Kind regards,

Timothy Selvage

Hi Tim,

I have some direct comparisons using a D300, D3 and S5Pro. I’ll try and process them later today for you,

Matt

While I do not have any Sigma experience, I do have Nikon 10.5 vs Tokina 10-17.  The Tokina is much sharper and controls lens flare much more efficiently than the Nikon does.  Plus you can order the Tokina with the lens hood already shaved off.  On an FX body you set the Tokina to 12mm and shoot 4 around tilted up 5 degrees.  Here is my latest set using the Tokina lens.  http://www.dlsphoto.net/Hawaii2015/Hawaii2015.htm

Thanks for sharing Dennis. Nice photos. Though I will probably go with the Nikon 10.5 shaved as I'm after the optical simplicity of a prime and have seen good side-by-side examples comparing it with the Tokina and Sigma on a full frame camera and felt that the Nikon gave the best results.

If anyone else comes across this post and is after example images to compare the Sigma 10mm, Nikon 10.5mm and Tokina 10-17mm on a crop sensor and/or full frame I recommend getting in touch with  mat...@360precision.com who has been most helpful in helping me make a final decision by sending me great real world side by side comparisons.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice.

Kind regards,

Timothy Selvage
