Pamela,

I agree. There is a lot of benefits and it does sort out who is
ethical who is not. The question is on the subjectivity of the design.
Who gets to decide who is a good designer or not, a member or not. I
do think there is a place for group consensus. Overall bad design does
make its self known. Sometimes is just hard to be that honest with
either yourself or another person. That said though sometimes there is
room for maverick design and current youth culture has a problem with
authoritative establishment set boundaries. All worth discussing. My
first blush is the pros outway the cons but the cons are worth
exploring.

I like the idea of certicication on a ethics basis, but what criteria
is used to become accredited or certified? Is there some type of test,
or are the membership dues and professional status all that's
required?
