Third-party soft synths in PT?

Hi guys,

As I said before, I am thinking of moving from sonar to ProTools. I am primarily a MIDI composer. Not an engineer. As a result, my main interest is learning all I can about working with MIDI and software synths. I realize that the instruments which come with PT are not the greatest. However, I need to know anything I can about how well third-party instruments act within ProTools particularly as far as excessability is concerned. Has anyone tried to use any Vienna Instruments with ProTools? I realize that the Vienna interface is not accessible. It takes sighted assistance and a control surface to be able to use them. But are there any real roadblocks to instantiating Vienna instruments with PT? Are there any other obstacles unique to PT that I should know about when considering using third-party instruments such as Vienna?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Nobody here uses VSL. Instantiating the plug-in wouldn't be a problem but calling up presets would almost certainly be a road block unless the presets are available in Avid's native preset format. It's possible to call up patches with assistance and save them out as Avid presets but that can certainly be time-consuming depending on the number of patches. Once saved, those presets can be shared, however, which is a good thing but, once again,I doubt anybody here will have invested in VSL.

Best,

Slau

An instrument I recommend is Structure.

It’s a 30 gb library that boasts a wide range of sounds. What’s more, once it’s installed, folks have created presets for it so you can access all of the instruments right from the library.
Same goes for Strike, which is a great drum library.
We’re still in weird work around mode for synths in Pro Tools.
Honestly, any composition I do anymore runs through Sonar, because I have access to Kontakt on that side of things, and Kontakt has some of the best libraries I’ve heard.
While I think PT is a fantastic option for most recording applications, if you are heavily working with soft synths, you’ll find yourself wandering back to sonar for those needs because the access can’t be beat on that front.

Are you using SONAR using Boot Camp on your Mac? Or do you have a purpose built SONAR machine.I assume that you are using 8.53. Is that correct?

I would imagine those are incredibly inaccessible at this time.

I actually used a control surface to map out RMX a few years ago.  It took vision and a lot of time.  But it could be done.  If you got someone to MIDi learn some of the basic functions of RMX to a really good control surface, you might be okay.  but you would definitely need a lot of sighted help initially.

all:

thanks for your reply, I have the bcf2000 as control surface, and I
can bring a sited person to help but not always, I mean I need to do
something that will help for a long time.

but what about kontakt,? I know that it's not accessible but just load
and save presets, is it possible?

is there any hope in the future to become accessible? because kontkat
now on windows is accessible do to hsc help.

hope you can tell me that kontakt can be accessible because I use it

Hi,
I don’t know how much this will help or if it will at all, but i have read on the Air music website that Structure can play Kontakt libraries. I don’t know though if there are presets for those libraries or what gives there.
