Hi All,

I just downloaded PT 10.3.3 from the link below, and installed it.

http://secure.digidesign.com/services/avid/kb/downloads.cfm?digiArticleId=43732
There are two files to download.
Avid_Virtual_Instruments_10_3_Installer_77520.dmg
Pro_Tools_10_3_3_Installer_78570.dmg

Those are full installer, so they recommended removing the old PT. Using
the Uninstalling app included in the installer image, I clean
uninstalled my PT 10.01 before installing the new one. Then, I just
removed the folder Library/Application Support/Avid/Plugins that has AAX
plugins.
FYI, the old plugins are located in Library/Application
Support/Digidesign/Plug-ins, and they have .dpm extension. AAX plugins
are located in Library/Application Support/Avid/Plugins, and they have
.aaxplugin extension.

I have to go through the list to make sure I'm not missing any plugins,
but all the effects and instruments seem to work fine.
I thought some people might be interested.

No, I don't think they are, at least I don't know of anyone getting them to work. I would go so far as to guess that they won't be until at least pro tools 11, although as I said, that is merely a guess.

Hi,

AAX plugins are not accessible yet. That's why it's important to delete
the aax plugin folder. Then the PT falls back to the old plugin format,
and you can access the parameters with voiceover, at least the
automatable ones.
That way you can use the latest pt update, and at the same time use the
plugins.

Does this also apply to newer plugins? I hadd an offer of some new plugins, a reverb and some kind of delay thingimajig, but i don't know if they're only in aax format.

Hi,

After installing the update, just go inside the folders I mentioned in
previous emails, and go through the list. You'll see all the plugins in
there.
If it's certain plugin is offered in only AAX format, instead of
deleting entire folder, you can just delete the ones that are available
in old format as well. Then you can mix and match.
Personally it's more important for me to be able to use plugins that I
can access parameters, than to use plugins that I can only access presets.

i have no
problems yet knock on wood.

i feel like i would get a better performance out of my voice over if i upgrade to lion.
but i can't make that move just yet,
because i have logic  9 still, and i need to grab a lot of projects  from it.

Hi,

If you run Snow Leopard, do you have any problems with PT 10.3.3, like those found if running Mountain Lion?

Thanks,

Logic 9 works in lion no problem. You can upgrade whenever you want.

Hi All, I'm a Mac virgin, and am about to get my first one with a view to learning ProTools, but I also want to use Boot Camp so that I can run Sonar under Windows to keep working on existing projects. I've been looking at the whole Mac range and should really appreciate some advice from those with knowledge and experience of the Mac world. I'm leaning towards a Mac Mini, with a 2.6 GHZ quad core processor, 16 GB RAM, and 1 TB fusion drive. Do you think this will be adequate, or should I be looking at the Mac Pro with its rather overwhelming customisation choices? Or are there other considerations which would make you choose MacBook Pro or iMac? Any comments or thoughts very much appreciated. It is really going to depend on your needs. Will you be recording personal
projects, will you be attempting to use it as a foundation for a recording
studio? In short, with my small knowledge I think it will be very ataquit
for personal needs. I have a friend who I shared my studio with and he used
a Mac mini with less power than the one you listed and he was able to
satisfy a small client bass without any complaints about his Mini's
capabilities. I use an Imac and I think it is doing ok myself.

Peter:

You might think about the Mac Mini Server which comes with two hard drives.
I use one and also use bootcamp.

Cheers.

Hi. That is a very good choice, but, as others have mentioned, go for
a second internal hard drive for session files, or, go for an external
thunderbolt or firewire 800 drive.

Cameron.

Hi:
Well, I have a Macbook pro with a 500gb ssd and 8gb ram, a quad core i7. It
is around two years old now but still kicks. If I were to want to set it up
for dual booting I would want more hard drive space. PT sessions and sample
libraries eat up a lot of drive space and though I have plenty for use on
the Mac side, I would really be stretching it to run windows and sonar as
well. If you do want to set it up to dual boot you probably would want to
get a regular mac like the mini or mac pro with a 1tb drive at least. Also,
just as in Sonar, you really should use a second drive for audio. With the
sdd it isn't quite as critical because of the lack of a head reading and
writing but I rarely use it in a mission critical situation where I'm
recording on a bunch of tracks at once. And I really wouldn't want to leave
my macbook pro at my gig, it's too hot an item. I know that windows runs
well on a mac, but for some reason I just want to keep the two worlds
separated.

If you were to get the 2010 or 2011 macbook pro, you could remove the optical drive and put a secondary hd in using a bracket from OWC called the Data Doubler. I did this last summer and it works great.

My main drive is a 120 gb ssd, and my secondary drive is a 750 gb 7200 rpm hybrid drive with 4 gb of flash.

With 8 gb of ram, I can pretty much do what I need to do with that machine. I've also got windows installed on the secondary drive, so I can mess with reaper and sonar under NVDA.

I'm running Pro Tools and Mainstage or logic at the same time, and not finding any problems of late. Hope this might help a bit.
