What you will need to figure out is if pro tools supports external MIDI or playing sounds on external MIDI Devices. You will also need to connect the analog outs of the Yamaha keyboard to the analog in of your audio interface and record the sounds to an audio track.
If pro tools supports sending MIDI out an external device then you can make this happen.

Hi Steve Martin, pro tools support all the things that you mentioned, i'm just not sure how to connect my Yamaha Motif es 6 to my current setup. i know that pro Tools supports midi but the question is can i use a usb cable to connect it to my mac mini. After connecting my Yamaha motif es6 to my mac mini through the usb port what is next? Thank you for any other information that you might have concerning my questions.

Hi David,

Short answer is yes. A couple things:
If you want to use the keyboard for midi inside of Pro Tools, and use expand or complete control or another virtual instrument, you can connect the keyboard through USB directly to the computer or through midi to an interface which connects to your computer, and make an instrument track in ProTools. This will allow you to use the instrument of your choosing in ProTools and use the keyboard to control it.
If you want to use the actual sounds from the Yamaha, then you'll need to take an audio out from it and make an audio track in ProTools to record it to.
If you want to go the other way, and use existing midi that is in ProTools and have the motif play it back, you will need to reassign the midi output of an instrument track to your keyboard instead of a plug-in, or you can create a midi track with just Mitty in and out.
Pro Tools sees all midi keyboards and devices simultaneously as inputs, automatically. So if you have a complete control keyboard and your other keyboard, you can use both at the same time on any track etc. I know this is a lot, but hope this helps

Hi, do you have a semular setup to what i have? What is your setup like? I’m asking just so that i can get some ideas. Here is my setup as is it is now. nks88 keyboard, yamaha motifes 6, mark of The Unicorn midi interface which is usb by the way a scarlet 18 20 Audio interface. This is what i have at the moment but i would like to add some other keyboards and moduals but the problem is that the NKS88 only supports how many midi channels? I’m not sure on that i thaught the midi channel count that was supported was 32 . Could you please confirm this for me. Thank you

No, I only have an S88 Komplete Kontrol keyboard.

The number of midi out channels only matters on the pro tools side, if you’re wanting to trigger other midi modules etc. I think you’d be better staying in the box nd/or using your motif. But google midi and connection/channel routing etc and you might get a better understanding of what’s possible or not with the setup/hardware you have.

Best,
Rocco

Wouldn't he need to get the motif into midi mode and enable that, and maybe turn local mode off? Where in the motif do you go to do this? Even if he doesn't need to do this in his case, I'd personally like to know how to navigate the motif to do both these things, what to push, and how many times to scroll, select, etcetera.

Chris.

Hi chris, i hope that i have the spelling of your name right? Thank you for that information. I know for a fact that i can use my yamaha motif es and connect it to a computer using a usb cable. i want to use the NKS88 in order to play the sounds of my motif es6. The reason is so that i don't have to keep changing to a different octive. This is something that i have to do when using the motif es 6 But i can use the NKS 88 so that i can act as though i have the motif es 8 instead of the motif es 6. Thank you for all your help and i want to thank rocco as well. If someone has a semular setup to mine i would like to know how you have things setup? This way i can get an idea of how i should have things going. the only other thing that i wish that i had is more audio outs in order that i can connect more of my gear i have the scarlet 18-20ii Think that the 2 roman numerals stand for 2 if i'm not mistaken. Thanks again.
