I came across this page at Smooth-On for making casting for prototyping, and wanted to forward it on to this group:  http://www.smooth-on.com/Prototyping-and-In/c1238/index.html  -- there are some nice photos and videos that nicely explain the casting process on the site.

I was particularly excited to see the example of the Moen shower head (http://www.smooth-on.com/gallery.php?galleryid=182) - the cast copy looks really nice!

One can iterate designs with a Makerbot, then produce a master at Shapeways, and then cast copies of the product without going to expensive tooling.

Hey, thanks for sending that along... What a great resource. I have a feeling I'll be doing one of those processes before too much longer.

As a way of getting nicer-than-FDM finishes on a part cast from a MakerBotted master (instead of the Shapeways/other route), there's the Super Sculpy process illustrated on one of the recent MakerBot TV episodes. I bought a couple of pounds of the stuff in order to try.., but I'm still negotiating permission to turn our toaster oven into a plastics processing oven! I think it could be good for some part but for others (very fine, sharp detail) it'll just be better to send for SLA.

You might want to check out your local thirft shop for the toaster oven...  I did the same when I needed to heat circuit boards for soldering!  :)
