'Structuring Treatment for Complex Trauma'
Presenter: Hvovi Bhagwagar, PhD
Abstract:
This presentation is designed for both new and experienced therapists and focuses on effective strategies for structuring the treatment of complex trauma. The session will provide an introduction to the three-phased approach to trauma treatment, which offers a roadmap to help clinicians conceptualise how to work with clients who have experienced complex trauma.
The talk will begin with an overview of complex trauma, the pervasive effects of trauma on a client's sense of self, interpersonal relationships, and emotional regulation. Participants will be introduced to the widely recognized three-phased approach to trauma treatment, designed to prioritize client safety and stabilization before moving toward processing traumatic memories and consolidating therapeutic gains.
Special emphasis will be placed on helping clients stay within their window of tolerance (WOT) to establish both emotional and physical safety. Clinicians will learn how to assess client readiness for trauma memory work and will be introduced to various therapeutic modalities for processing traumatic memories.
The final segment of the presentation will focus on strategies to help clients integrate their trauma work into their broader sense of self. The process of termination in trauma treatment will also be discussed, with a focus on preparing clients for the end of therapy while maintaining the therapeutic progress achieved.
A case vignette will be used throughout the presentation to demonstrate the practical application of the three-phased approach, and an interactive discussion will allow participants to integrate the theoretical concepts into their clinical practice.
