Hi all,

I was considering going to SIPS this year (still haven't registered).  If I do, I want to work on Psych-DS -- its documentation, outreach, whatever needs doing.  Is anyone on this list going, and are there already plans for a hack/unconference/whatever?

Hi Pat,

I'm going to Rotterdam this July. SIPS committee has finished the call for hack/uncoference two months ago. I'm not sure there will be another.
I'd like to join Psych-DS activity because I contributed the data set as the example project.

best,

Sau-Chin

I'm going and I submitted something on the topic of metadata. I haven't heard back yet, so I think it probably wasn't picked.
I think it's fully booked though, so you need to put yourself on a waitlist?

I think I will register -- I'm trying to rustle together some funds to do so.  If there's sufficient interest, I'd like to try to work down the list of active Psych-DS issues to move the project as far along as we can -- sort of a Psych-DS sprint.  This may not be an official hack but that's ok with me -- I'd mostly like to get this project to a usable state so that, for example, data releases at the Psych Science Accelerator can use this standard (and any open data I myself post in the next year).

Thanks for the support, Patrick! I think it would be great to populate and then try and close issues prior to SIPS, so we have a nice tool working when it comes!

No official decisions yet, but at the moment it's looking like I do *not* have the funding to hire the BIDS developer consultants to build out the validator (waiting on a quote of what they *do* think might be doable), so it might be especially worth thinking about what could close gaps, including both good tutorials and functions that attempt to read in Psych-DS datasets (even if they just fail silently)?  I'd be interested to hear what people think about useful places to start on this!

That’s a really good idea, Peder. A hackathon where people bring their own data (or use publicly available data) to work through after a tutorial on the spec could generate both a set of examples and working through concrete examples will probably bring up edge cases to think about.

Tutorials on how to curate and work with JSON meta-data would be fantastic. As a user, I also often find myself missing a comprehensive example data set that is fully up to spec, and which implements most or all of the MUST, RECOMMENDED and OPTIONAL features of the spec. Such an example data would serve as a useful reference manual, and would hopefully help me resolve the two most common issues I encounter: (1) what goes into the JSON meta-data, and where does it go? (2) where do I put things?

I imagine such a data set could also be useful for app development. Would this perhaps be something we could curate at SIPS?

Cheers,
Peder

I'll be at SIPS and am happy to work on this. Our spec is much simpler than BIDS (right now at least), and I don't think adapting the BIDS-validator (or just writing a new one) will be a lot of work (at least, not to get something functional that covers most common use cases).

I think there's a lot of interest among reproducibility-minded folks in promoting the standard (I've had a few people approach me to ask when the standard will be ready for use), which is partly why I'd like to have a working spec and some

... ugh, accidental send --

... and some tools to ensure that a dataset is spec-compliant.  Long term, of course, we'll need *useful* tools as well, but I think everyone on this list knows that. :)

I can't help with software development, but I can certainly help with some of the tech writing.  I might also be able to help with a bit of the R development, but I know many on this list are much more expert than I.  Finally, I'm happy to help gear up for whatever we do at SIPS -- either a formal hack or an informal meeting.

Hi folks - thanks for getting the conversation started about SIPS! I think this will be a great chance to do some teaching about the specification and discover what kinds of things people are hoping to build.  It would of course be great if we have at least the beginnings of a validator to show off!

There are at least two big things to figure out, and I've started issues on both:

EVERYONE ON THIS LISTSERV, whether you can make it to SIPS or not, is invited to come talk about what you'd like to see.

Validator building:
It would be great to have something usable for SIPS, even if it's just to give people a roadmap and specific ways to help us get the rest of the way. I got a quote back from some developers, and we've also discussed getting something spun up on our own. Tal, you've said adopting the BIDS validator should be straightforward on our own; I'd like to see if that's the case! Here is an issue for talking about building the validator: https://github.com/psych-ds/psych-DS/issues/22

Talk to you soon,

Melissa
