And what does it mean to Professor Ackerman? Find out when

The Progressive Scholarship Workshop RETURNS,
TONIGHT at 6:30 pm in Room 121

We'll be discussing the attached paper, Bruce Ackerman's essay titled "Reviving Democratic Citizenship?". The paper is a presentation that Professor Ackerman gave at the American Sociological Association's annual conference last month. It begins with the observation that "besides the formal act of voting," Americans engage in few "significant acts of citizenship." At the same time, it is impossible for Americans not to interact with fellow citizens qua citizens, and Ackerman proposes a "citizenship agenda" that "aims to create new sociological contexts for the exercise of citizenship in ordinary life." Drawing on his previous work in four books--Voting with Dollars (with Professor Ayres), Deliberation Day (with James Fishkin), The Stakeholder Society (with Professor Alstott), and The Decline and Fall of the American Republic--Professor Ackerman strives, in this talk, to connect the methods and goals of these four planks of his proposed "citizenship agenda" for progressive reform. The paper is very timely, very short (only 20 pages, sans footnotes!) and very "fresh"--literally, it's Professor Ackerman's latest work. So take a half-hour and read the paper, and come chat with Professor Ackerman about how his ideas around democratic citizenship are evolving, and where he and his colleagues plan to take these ideas in future writing.

1Ls: Yes, you are welcome! Come!!
2Ls: Callbacks are over--you have no excuse not to get your brain back into gear!
3Ls: The time is ripe for your Constitutional Moment!

Looking forward to seeing everyone there,
Anjali
