Hi PSWers,

Attached please find the reading for next week's PSW, a paper by Daniel Markovits titled "Snowball Inequality." It's still a work in progress, and he's really looking forward to the discussion of the material. Professor Markovits spoke fondly of his ACS event last semester, which some of you (non-1Ls) may remember involved, inter alia, a spirited conversation about redistribution and welfare economics. This paper touches on similar issues; it argues that the debate around the desirability and feasibility of economic equality as both a political and economic goal ought not to be framed as a clash between capitalism and justice. Fairness and justice are important fundamental values that do sometimes--but not always--conflict with capitalism, but progressives tend to characterize that conflict overinclusively. Sometimes, it can be "sidestepped," because sometimes the roots of economic inequality may be "condemned purely from within capitalism," Markovits posits. This thought-provoking piece gets at the heart of the clash between liberal and conservative values and the related clash over economics and economic policy--it's a paper that's right up the PSW alley, and I hope y'all will enjoy reading it!

Enjoy the long weekend,
Anjali

Someone has just pointed out that this document is incorrectly saved as "Week 4." My sincere apologies--it is, of course, Week 5's reading.
