Three-Year Master of Architecture Track Gets Underway: Busy Summer Ahead
Please help us in extending a warm welcome to our new Three-Year Master of Architecture students, who began their architectural studies with us this week. The group of eight students have spent the week in their first design studio working under the tutelage of adjunct faculty member Lisa Young, and studying the earliest beginnings of architecture in Assistant Professor Juan Heredia’s Architectural History & Theory seminar. We are excited that these accomplished students have joined our School of Architecture. Also in the third floor studios this summer are the Fast Track group, tackling their final two design studio courses, ARCH 480 and 481 with B.D. Wortham-Galvin and Brent Young, and an ARCH 281 class with Nikola Boscanin.
Disaster Relief Forum Wraps Up; Students Prepare for Design-Build Adventure in Montana
PSU Architecture students had a week-long immersion in the principles and issues of emergency relief and reconstruction this week, with five workshops consisting of talks by architects and experts in community resiliency, emergency evaluation and response, and rebuilding after disasters. Guest lecturers included Jay Raskin, architect; David Tarries of KPFF and Rachel Bailey of Architecture for Humanity; Mort Anoushiravani and Matt Streng of Mercy Corps; and David Perkes of Gulf Coast Community Design Studio. Next week, our students will put their new knowledge to use when they travel to the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Lame Deer, Montana, where they will join a team of collaborators from several US universities to participate in rebuilding efforts following a disastrous wildfire that affected the region, evaluating strawbale as a potential resilient building material; and attend a traditional Powwow on July 4, participating in Cheyenne cultural events and customs. This forum and design-build experience are offered by the School of Architecture’s Center for Public Interest Design. More information about this course can be found here.

Policy Re: Use of Spray and Power Tools
Please remember that it is NEVER acceptable to use any kind of spray in or around Shattuck Hall or any other building. This includes spray paint, spray fixative, spray adhesive, spray lacquer, aerosol hair spray… if it’s aerosol and disperses any fumes or particles into the air, it’s NOT OKAY, even if you are outside the building. Please use materials for your projects that do not require spraying. Students who use spray in or around the building will be charged $50. If spray chemicals are found in the studio or anywhere in the building, they will be removed by the School of Architecture office.
Power tools are never allowed in studio or anywhere in Shattuck Hall except for in the shop during its business hours. If you need to use power tools, go to Shattuck Hall 130 and use the facilities there.
Fire Safety Requirements
Please note the following fire safety precautions required throughout Shattuck Hall by the fire marshal: Extension cords and space heaters are not allowed. Power strips are allowed, but they must never be plugged into another power strip. Every power strip must be directly plugged into a wall outlet. Avoid stretching electrical cords across walkways and in between desks. If doing so is unavoidable, check with Karen in the School office to request walk-over cord covers, a limited number of which are available in the office. Thank you for helping to keep our studio spaces safe and compliant with fire marshal requirements.
