“Public Space Now” Exhibition

Now till November 27, 2013

Discussion: Design in the Public Realm: Tuesday, November 12, 6pm

As the line between private and public space becomes less clear, what does it mean to design the public sphere? To explore this question, urbanLAB:PDX, a research collaborative at the PSU School of Architecture, presents a global survey of more than 30 contemporary design projects in the public realm. These include reclaimed waterfronts, active streetscapes, parks, communal rituals, and neighborhood spaces, all amid the diverse demands placed by democratic use today. The exhibition illustrates more than thirty designs, ranging from New York City’s Highline to Paris’s temporary riverfront beaches to Ballast Park on former brownfields in Sidney to Waterfire in Providence. Check out the explorations of PSU architecture students on their Facebook page below https://www.facebook.com/pages/Portland-Public-Spaces-PSU-Architecture/232907110207113.

The exhibition is being hosted by the Center for Architecture, and runs from November 7 to 27. An open gallery discussion of design in the public realm will be held on November 12, 6pm.

“The Present Is Articulate” Call for Proposals

Project Cityscope is calling all artists, makers, thinkers and performers to submit a proposal for the “urban intervention” series titled “The Present is Articulate.” Proposals are to investigate new definitions for infrastructure and space, while identifying and opening space for play. Questions one should ask before creating proposals are: “How can live, time-based art in an urban space affect renewal to what has become habitual and mundane?” “What possibilities are created from installing

flux in the use/play with(-in) urban spaces?” Proposals must be a self contained sustained project that can be assembled, executed, and disassembled in one day. Submit proposals and any questions to in...@projectcityscope.org before 1/31/2014 for this round of project considerations. Please fill out the application form at http://tiny.cc/xzdo5w and submit it when you are sending your project proposals.

Volunteer Positions

Volunteer Opportunity: Community Garden for Harrison Park School

At Harrison Park School, plans are underway to create a public garden for this low-income community, which is facing serious hunger issues, in addition to low education levels and language barriers. The school’s existing food donation program meets only 10% of the community’s needs during the school year and families are forced to look elsewhere for food assistance during the summer months. A community garden would enable neighbors and families to grow their own food and increase their access to sufficient nutrition year-round. Design meetings are currently being held with the community, and the project planners are seeking help from PSU Architecture students to create CAD drawings of the designs, so that the school volunteers can use these professional plans to work from when they are constructing the garden. Student volunteers would most likely be asked to visit the site, attend design meetings and utilize the ideas generated and decided upon during the meetings to create professional drawings. To volunteer for this project or to get more information, please contact Ralph Leftwich at rwle...@gmail.com.

Policy Re: Use of Spray and Power Tools

Please remember that it is NEVER acceptable to use any kind of spray in or around Shattuck Hall or any other building. This includes spray paint, spray fixative, spray adhesive, spray lacquer, aerosol hair spray… if it’s aerosol and disperses any fumes or particles into the air, it’s NOT OKAY, even if you are outside the building. Please use materials for your projects that do not require spraying. If you absolutely must use spray, you may use the spray booth in the Art building, but this requires planning ahead and contacting the School of Art in advance in order to make arrangements. Students who use spray in or around the building will be charged $50. If spray chemicals are found in the studio or anywhere in the building, they will be removed by the School of Architecture office.

Power tools are never allowed in studio or anywhere in Shattuck Hall except for in the shop during its business hours. If you need to use power tools, go to Shattuck Hall 130 and use the facilities there.

Student Lounge Cleaning Update

Studies estimate that 40 to 50% of all food in the United States goes to waste. Please help us lower that number while keeping the fridge clean! Toward that end, we will begin a new refrigerator cleaning/clearing schedule intended to help start the week with a clean slate and keep the fridge free of moldy, wasted food. Every Monday at 12:30 the studio assigned to cleaning that week will go to the lounge and clear out all of the contents of the fridge, throwing away anything that is in the fridge. Make sure to remove your food for the half hour between 12:30 and 1 on Mondays, or just eat it! Please consider only bringing the amount of food that you can actually eat that day, so that food does not go to waste. The studio in charge will not remind people, so make sure to keep on top of removing your own food. This may be a tough transition, but anyone who forgets and gets good food thrown away will surely remember the following week! Questions? Contact rbr...@pdx.edu. Thanks.

Please note the following fire safety precautions required throughout Shattuck Hall by the fire marshal:  Extension cords and space heaters are not allowed. Power strips are allowed, but they must never be plugged into another power strip. Every power strip must be directly plugged into a wall outlet. Avoid stretching electrical cords across walkways and in between desks. If doing so is unavoidable, check with Karen in the School office to request walk-over cord covers, a limited number of which are available in the office. Thank you for helping to keep our studio spaces safe and compliant with fire marshal requirements.
