Hey PSU AES,
2008 is the 60th Anniversary of AES! At a recent celebration held by the New York section, a unique video programme was introduced, which is available for viewing on the internet here:
The first half of the video is comprised of a few interviews, and the second half is a documentary history of AES and audio technology.
Here is a description of the video programme from AES:
>"Oral History Project - 60th Anniversary Presentation," compiled by
>Harry Hirsch. It featured interview clips of those who have made
>significant contributions to the progress of audio over the years.
>Founding AES Secretary Norman Pickering spoke about how weekly
>audio-focused dinners eventually turned into a worldwide organization
>known as the Audio Engineering Society. This was followed by a
>fascinating story from Frank Laico about the former CBS 30th Street
>Studio's acoustics. Lewis Goodfriend talked about the lack of standards
>at the time, and how the AES Journal came into being. He also added that
>he's still excited about audio. Les Paul cheerfully recounted how he
>began researching audio at a young age, taking others along with him. He
>mentioned how important learning from others is and expressed his
>happiness for ongoing improvements and advancements in audio. Jack
>Mullin was shown demonstrating several early tape machines and talking
>about how the analog tape 'revolution' transformed the audio world.
>
>The DVD continued to tell the story of audio progress through the years.
>It touched on topics such as the LP record (and associated
>technologies), the advent of stereo, playback system concepts, speaker
>designs, Bell Labs' experiments with Leopold Stokowski conducting the
>Philadelphia Orchestra, the contributions of Ray Dolby and Robert Moog,
>compact cassette tape, and up to the Compact Disc. Philips' venerable
>"Perfect Sound Forever" slogan for the CD provided a good chuckle to all
>in the business of using their ears! 16 bit/44.1kHz is certainly not the
>future of audio.
I hope that you find this a useful resource.
