Anybody else have a first issue SCPH-1001 Playstation One that wants
to attest to it's audio quality? I've done quite a bit of reading
about it's abilities as a Redbook Source and finally decided to pick
one up on ebay, it was pretty cheap <$25 shipped and it certainly
doesn't sound bad.

I've done some comparisons the best I could between my originals and
lossless copies played through a M-Audio transit and the originals on
the PS1 do seem to be a bit more lively, it could all be in my head
though. :)

I've heard about those claims. It'd be interesting to do a blind
test. And speaking of blind tests, we should organize AES to conduct
a group-wide blind study of audio compression formats. There's
Windows software that can pretty much set everything up (WinABX),
although I haven't used it yet.

Sounds like a good idea. Speaking of the mp3 comparison this site
just popped up on digg: http://mp3ornot.com/ it took me quite a few
listens to notice the differences in the supposed 128kbps file vs the
320kbps file.

Yea that's really cool.  The cymbals are what give it away, so if anyone out there is having trouble hearing the difference, listen carefully to the cymbals.  I think the high and broad spectrum of cymbals is difficult to encode.

I have a an SCPH-1001as well that I picked up for about $25. It was well worth it. It sounds different than but about as good as my $170 auzentech prelude soundcard.

For ABX testing, I'd suggest using foobar and the ABX plugin for foobar.

Hmm yea I've heard of that, but never used it before (I'm a Mac user).  Maybe I'll have to check it out.  What I'd like is if someone else could organize the demonstration/study, since I have practically no time to do it.  Any takers?
