Wow, it's actually happening. It seems like there's new exciting things happening with music every day. Anyway, I've been saying for a while that it'd be really great if bands provided raw multitrack parts to fans so they could do with as they please (create their own remix, listen to a pure isolated vocal track or guitar solo, mix and match different song pieces, etc.) Well, this is essentially being brought to you (for now just for their new single) by the same band that shook the music industry last fall, Radiohead, when they released their new album through a pay-what-you-want online system. Anyway, I was wondering what everyone else thought about the possibility of this sort of thing being available on a larger scale, so let's get some discussion going on the forum (http://groups.google.com/group/psu_aes). Just think about the possibilities.... Here's the email I got, which has some more information: " To celebrate this week's single release (we still have those in England) Radiohead have broken up the song 'Nude' into pieces for you to remix. For those of you who enjoy this sort of thing, you can buy the separate components or 'stems' (bass, voice, guitar, strings/FX and drums) and remix your own version of the song. You can do this by adding your own beats and instrumentation or just remixing the original parts. More information here: http://www.radioheadremix.com/information/ You can buy the stems here: http://www.radioheadremix.com/buy/ You can upload your finished mixes here http://www.radioheadremix.com and be judged and even voted on by 'the public'. You can also create a widget allowing votes from your own website, Facebook or MySpace page to be sent through too. Hope you enjoy it For those of you who aren't that way inclined, Nude is also available in its entirety on CD and 7 inch (UK release) at the usual retail outlets. "

This is such a good idea and once again I commend Radiohead. The
possibilities are endless when things like this are available to the
public allowing entire new pieces to be created. I tried thinking
about what the downside would be for an artist to do this but I
couldn't really think of one except for simply personal preference on
keeping originality. But why not follow in the steps of Radiohead? Not
only could you hear amazing twists and turns that you may not have
thought possible with your music, but you'll make more money too! I
really hope things like this are soon available on a much larger scale
because I love remixing music and it truly gives people an
appreciation for how much work and how many parts go into even just a
single song. Hearing things like that makes me and probably most
others glad to pay the $10 for an album.

Ah excellent, I've found another example of this sort of thing, by
another excellent band (The Arcade Fire). This one makes interaction
with the the raw tracks even easier, and you can check it out for
free:

Another example of what will hopefully be the future of the music
industry...

NIN has released their new album as a free download from their website
(nin.com), and this is only months after they made 9 of the 36 tracks
on "Ghosts: I-IV" available for free.

What's even better about the new release, though, is that they're
making it available in multiple formats - high-quality MP3, FLAC, M4A
lossless, and higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE, plus a PDF w/ artwork
and credits. I'm really excited about the lossless distribution,
because that lets users encode at whatever bitrate they want. I
really hope artists, record companies, and distributors (like iTunes)
start giving the option to download lossless files. It's also really
cool that they give you the 24/96 files.

If anyone else finds examples of this type of thing, let us know.
Hopefully we'll start seeing more of this than we can keep up with!
