Hi everyone, and thanks for joining the PSU AES Google Group. This is
our forum for discussing all varieties of audio topics and AES
information.

So that we all get to know each other, new members should introduce
themselves by posting to this thread. Make it as long or as short as
you'd like; just tell us what you're all about - academic major or
focus, research or projects, personal interests in audio, career
aspirations, etc.

Ok, I guess I'll kick this off, seeing how I did create the Group
after all. Anyway, I'm Todd Marco, the current Chair of PSU AES. So
why don't I tell you a little about myself?

I graduated from Penn State with a B.S.E.E. in May, then went out to
Chicago for the summer to work for Shure, and now I'm back in good old
State College to start getting that Master's Degree. I'm studying
Electrical Engineering, but I'm also planning to take as many
Acoustics courses as I'm permitted. My thesis/paper research will be
on Class D switching amplifiers, which are definitely the next
revolution in amplifier design. I'm also a Teaching Assistant, and
right now I'm running a couple sections of EE310 lab (Circuit Design).

So, my motivation for pursuing Electrical Engineering is, of course,
audio. I mean, whose isn't, right? I've always had a strong love of
music, but it really got started when I picked up that guitar in 7th
grade... no turning back after that, and so here I am now. Amplifiers
have always been a huge interest of mine. I've built some tube guitar
amps projects, as well as some other little audio projects. Most of
my experience is with analog circuits, but I also took some DSP
classes, and I'm trying to expose myself to some digital electronics,
as well as acoustics, as I mentioned. There's a lot under the "audio
umbrella," and I really love it all.

Also, as Chair of our AES section, I'm excited about all the
possibilities that lie ahead. There's a lot of great things we can do
if we all show an active involvement. So, to kind of keep the fire
burning, I hope we can get some good discussion going on this new PSU
AES Group. I look forward to meeting you all.

My name is Matt. My major is IST.

I have experience in populating circuit boards and making cables. I have all of my soldering equipment, other tools, and parts here at college. I don't have a desire to design audio equipment outside of cables since learning to do so would take up too much of my time. I have no qualms about continuing to build equipment, though, since DIY generally offers a better cost to performance ratio along with customization.

Audio overall is a hobby of mine, and I am an audiophile mainly interested in headphones and complementary gear.

If you are a head-fier, feel free to contact me directly.

Hi Everyone,

I'm Scott Porter, I'm the AES Vice-Chair. First of all, welcome to AES
- we're excited that there are so many audio enthusiasts on campus.
Our goal this term is to really take things up a notch and make this
group the best it can be. Currently, I'm a second year student in the
Graduate Program in Acoustics. I finished up my undergraduate work in
June 2006 with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Physics
from Kettering University in Flint, Michigan.

I'm Patrick. I'm a Computer Engineering major. I hope to be able to
combine computers and music into my career after I graduate. I was
going to do a Music Technology minor, but it looks like I'd have to go
an extra semester, so that probably won't work out.

I play the drums and guitar and in my freshman year I started making 8-
bit music with GameBoys. I'm also interested in circuit bending and
audio-related electronics (like synthesizers).

Hey, I'm Fred, just finished up my BA in Physics at Austin College,
and UTexas in June '07, now working toward a MS & PhD in the grad
program in acoustics. I, too, have a massive collection of music, and
enjoy every second of it. I have played the trumpet & french horn in
the past, though I'm not working on anything at the moment. I'd love
to learn cello. But really, I have little talent to perform - which
is why I wanted to make the experience better...
I love following audio technology, but I'm still learning the
nuances. Mark Levinson's designs are some of my notable
inspirations.
Ultimately I suppose I want to end up in industry, helping people
customize how they experience and interact with audio.

I'm Vince, and I'm a freshman this year at PSU. I'm currently in the
College of Engineering, and I'm hoping to go into the Acoustics
program as a graduate student. I'm not very experienced with Acoustics
outside of music performance, but I'm here to learn and to see what I
can do. I really like music and I also play the Baritone and the Bass
Guitar. I'm also interested in making music with my computer, but have
no idea where to begin.

Hi everyone!

I'm Jeanette, and probably one of the only non-engineers here! I am a
journalism major, with minors in English and business... still no hint
as to my audio-engineering interests, huh? Well, besides being
currently enrolled in InArt 050 (with Mark Ballora - awesome!), I
worked 2.5 years at one of the largest A/V contractors in the nation.
(I took some time off in the middle of my undergrad career).

>From that experience, I gained a fond appreciation for technology and
the amazing possibilities it affords us. Though I worked in sales and
marketing, I did learn a good bit about the technology of integrated
audio, video and lighting systems, and I am being a part of PSU AES in
an attempt to further my limited knowledge.

I also hope to network with many of you. I still have many ties at
the A/V company where I worked, and I realize many of you will be
looking for jobs soon. I hope this semester to get a presentation
together and work with Todd to maybe even have a video conference with
my company.

Anyway, probably more than you care to know about me!! But, I look
forward to talking to and learning from many of you this semester!

Thanks,
Jeanette
