Boundary Language Professional Development Program
October 22-24, 1999
Penn State University Park

a certification program for design professionals and students
**********************************************************

The Boundary Language Professional Development Program introduces a system
of spatial/temporal notation useful to professionals in the design fields
of architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design, as well as
geography, literature, performance, and the visual arts. The method is a
cross-cultural means of including evidence from a variety of sources and
media to discover the multilayered, complex structure of space transformed
by human temporality. The notation system supports the inclusion of
historical, cultural, esthetic, and philosophical considerations in the
evaluation and design of everyday space.

Participants will learn how to evaluate cultural, social, and esthetic
situations. They will combine fieldwork with Web-based study assignments
for active and collaborative learning. Site studies investigate values
and perceptions in zones of rapid cultural, historical, and esthetic
change. Planning topics include tourism, historical preservation, cultural
heritage, aging issues, disaster relief, and social conflict.
