AFRICAN-AMERICAN TRADITIONS
The legacy of the Harlem Renaissance

June 913, 1998
The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel
State College, Pennsylvania
**************************************************

The end of the ³American Century² is an auspicious moment to set about the
task of assessing African-American traditions and forecasting their
survival in the new millenium. For the summers between 1997 and 2002, the
Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies and its vital collaborators
have endeavored to offer a national forum of scholars and artists for new,
emerging work as well as new interpretations and perspectives on
African-American traditions, heritage, and redefinitions of self in a
challenging format of activities.

This year¹s summer institute focuses on the Harlem Renaissance (also known
as ³the New Negro Renaissance²), the artistic, literary, and intellectual
movement of the 1920s and 30s characterizing the country¹s first sustained
period of intense activity by African Americans in the fields of art,
dance, literature, and music.
