The Portland Fruit Tree Project, an exciting non-profit that serves the whole city, is seeking donations of perennial fruit-bearing trees and shrubs as well as herbs, flowering bulbs, or ornamentals. We will be planting all donations at the Sabin Community Orchard on March 5th at a work day we have planned. Here is a bit about the orchard:

The Sabin Community Orchard was founded with the mission of creating a site that will provide nutritious food, educational demonstration, and the opportunity for community leadership in the backyard of Sabin Neighborhood residents in Northeast Portland. The Sabin Community Association and the Portland Fruit Tree Project co-founded the Orchards. With help from many community members and Mayor Sam Adams, eigth new fruit trees—figs, plums, Asian and European pears, persimmons, quince, and apples —were planted on site in February 2010 to accompany two existing cherry trees and an apple tree. The site now has under story plantings around many of the fruit trees, water catching swales along the slope, and impressive signs explaining the space to passerbys. The orchard is located on NE Mason Street between NE 18th and 19th Avenues. Although it will take a few years to produce food for its community, the Orchards is well on its way to becoming a hub of sustainability, recreation, and stewardship in Sabin.

All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. We will also be advertising our donors on the PFTP website, in our next email newsletter that reaches over 2000 people, and at the planting day.

We welcome friends to donate cuttings from their yard!
