Hello Al,

This morning I heard a loud sound from my cell phone ( I had never heard this before), we are in the Bay Area, message was “move to higher ground, tsunami warning.” I then went to my seismometer display PC to see what that was about. It was just beginning to fill my screen. See https://theconnection.com/   In order to see the peaks I had to turn down the sensitivity by a factor of 20 on the most sensitive display. Also it looks as if that quake knock off my Lehman, probably needs to be reset. A few days ago there was a short news item on the internet about a group of seismologists that were working in the marsh lands of the Oregon coast. They were looking for the remnants of a 9.0 quake in the area in the early 1700’s. See https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/official17000127050000000/impact   The group was trying to find out when next really big one was going to hit the area.

Take Care,

Gary

I'm near Portland OR, in the initial process of testing a simple DC-response tiltmeter, not intending for it to be a seismometer at all. Although of course for large enough signals, it will be. I picked this one up pretty clearly. The peak showed almost 1 pF change in capacitance from my AD7747 based sensor (the step-changes are from getting up and returning to a nearby desk.) A rough calculation shows the quake moved my 10 cm pendulum through about 15 microns peak to peak, for a total local-vertical angular change of 0.15 milliradians, or 30 arc seconds.
