Hi,

USGS just upgraded the magnitude from Mw8,7 to Mw8,8. I did record this earthquake clearly in Iceland and Denmark.

Hi,

Larry closed that down many years ago if I remember correctly. Here is how the Mw8.8 earthquake appeared on my geophones.

No, I'm still here... Event files (must be in the PSN format) can be sent to psne...@webtronics.com. The problem I'm
currently having is a lot of bots are hitting my web site and requesting gif images for each event file on my system.
All of these requests are causing my WinQuake Image Server to crash. So currently the "GIF Image" link by each PSN event
file is not working. You can still download the event file and view it using WinQuake. I hope to have the GIF Image link
working again once I figure out a way of filtering out the bot request.

Hi Larry,
That 8.8M quake pinned the scale on my Force Balance Vertical seismometer. I assume the thing that pinned the scale was the electronics in the card. Have you seen that before? See attached

Hi Larry, having the GIF images is handy; however, as long as you have the service turned off, I have been downloading the source files to the browser, which in turn opens them in WinQuake. I do have a question. Who owns the bots downloading our data? Any idea what the data is being used for and where it is going?

It's great to see everyone still observing.  I still need to set up my H and V long-period units.  Now I'm bummed I did not do it earlier. :-)

I'm very happy Larry re-wrote my old EMON software (DOS, written in compiled QuickBASIC) for Windows.  However I'm tickled to see the "P" and "S" arrow markers have stayed the same.  I remember creating those graphical elements using a binary editor to fill in the 1's and 0's in hi-res (640x200) B&W mode on a PC Junior in 1983.  Gives me a kick every time I see them in use.  Carry on everyone, I promise I'll be joining you soon!  :-)

Hi Steve,

I have no idea who runs the bots or how they are using the data. All I see in the log files is lots of traffic from all
over the world.

Hi,

I did try to send my recordings of the Russia Mw8,8 earthquake. I got
hit with a size limit. I am going to try and send one file at the time,
but in the case of this large earthquake I record up to 120 minutes to
get all the trace at 100 SPS. Each file is around 3MB in size.

Best regards,

I'm out of town and excited to get home to see the data my seismometers
were recording. Can someone tell me what time the quake hit Washington
state, and also what time it hit Pennsylvania? I'm not looking for high
precision here, just nearest 15 minutes is enough.

I normally check the 150 plots on the USGS web site for this, but they
were solid black all day so I couldn't make out arrival times across the US.

Thanks,
/tvb

Gary,

Yes, there are ADC boards with higher dynamic range. More ADC bits = higher dynamic range. My 24 Bit ADC board had about
10db more dynamic range than my 16 bit board. Unfortunately this board is no longer in production. Angle Rodriguez has a
single channel and a three channel ADC board that uses the same ADC IC chip as my board. I'm unsure about the current
status of these boards.

For what its worth, the event hit my system in central NY at 23:36:18.

You can see a GIF image of what the entire record of the event looked like on my system at lwconklin.pairserver.com.  I created this simple web page for the express purpose of solving the "what did I catch when I wasn't home to see it" problem.  My home brew data recording program includes a function to send updates to the web page at hourly intervals.  I can log into the site with my cell phone from wherever I happen to be to see what my system has recorded recently.

Regarding cell phone apps for near real time alerts of quake events, I am using two apps that I have used for several years.

Earthquake Alert, by John Clemm, is a really well designed app.  Unfortunately, the author seems to have abandoned the program and it no longer is getting updates or bug fixes.  When I first started using it I could get near real time notifications, but somewhere along the line that capability was lost.  But I still use it for it's recent event reporting, very flexible report filtering, and several other very nice features.

The app that I am now using for event notifications is My Earthquake Alerts Pro, by JRustonApps.  This is a much more elementary app than Earthquake Alert, in that pretty much all it does is report recent events as they occur and send notifications to your device.  The event filter settings aren't as flexible but I reliably get notifications from the app before they show up anywhere else (eg. USGS email notifications).

I run the "pro" versions of both of these apps on my Android phone, to get rid of the adds.  I assume that both apps are also available in iphone versions, but I don't know for sure.

Hi,

We still make those 24bit boards and they are fully compatible with WinSDR and all modern seismic hardware.

We also make it in a 3 channel version.
