Expiry Dates; Is it 1st Dec 2013 or 31st Dec 2013

Hello colleagues,
I have seen many pharmaceutical products indicating the expiry dates stating month and year only e.g DEC 2013.
In this regard, what is the real last day of using this product if it was stored under manufacture's recommendations. Is it 1st DEC 2013 or 31 Dec 2013

it's a wrong practice. The date , month and year of expiry should be clearly indicated.

Hapo pagumu. since there is no date i would stop using it on the 1st of Dec

I think We should first understand the simple definition of the Expiration date!
Expiration date: The date on which something (Medicines) can no longer be used or not safe to be consumed.
From that definition I would say by 1st DEC 2013 the product should no longer be used or consumed.

In actual sense Wema if the product is written Dec 2013. the uses of the medicine in question should stop on November 30th 2013. Any person dispensing such Medication should make sure that the patient is not given quantities of which will last beyond the expiration date. Let us say if the duration of medication is 5 days and one is dispensing the medication to the client on 28th November 2013, that medicine should not be dispensed to the client in question as it will last to 3rd December 2013 the date at which the drug has already expired.

Expiry date is derived from the shelf life of the product and the date of manufacturing. Shelf life of the drug is usually determined by stability studies at various conditions. And stability studies are performed as Long term and accelerated stability studies at specified Temperature and Humidity. In the process the manufacture will collect samples for assays at various intervals eg initial, 1month, 3months and 6month for accelerated stability studies while the long term stability studies should cover the whole anticipated shelf life of the product. A product with shelf life of 24 months long term stability studies should cover at most the 36th Month. It is from these studies a manufacturer will declare the shelf life of the product. Now expiration dates of the products ( various batches) will depend on the date at which the product is manufactured. For instance if the product has 24 months shelf life and is manufactured today 6th February 2013 we expect this product to be labelled with expiration date of at most 6 February 2015. Now other manufacturers will only write February 2015 instead of 6th February 2015. In other areas the manufacturer may express expiry date as 2 years from the date of manufacturing.

The manufacturer may claim the product is having for instance shelf life of 3 years and yet submit stability data in a Dossier for registration conducted for 24 months while requeting to be granted a shelf life of 3 years. When asking the authority to register the product with shelf life of 3 years he had to produce a declaration that the stability data to cover the shelf life for 36 months will be provided letter,
