Hi all,

Hope those of us in the Atlantic States have escaped the worst of the storm.

A funny thing has happened to me over the last few weeks, which in some ways traces back to PSL. You see, I /used/ to be a runner. I ran a half marathon in the UK before moving to Canada, then let it slide due to the conditions in winter. During PSL - a few years (and more than pounds) later - I swear a run would have offed me, so was incredibly envious of Najati and Jen being able to go out for morning runs. That's been working its way through my subconscious for a few months.

Then, a few weeks ago, whilst on a walk with my dog, I found myself running for the sake of it. It didn't last long, but when the wheezing stopped, I ran again. I'm up to 2-3 miles four times a week now. I'm pretty sure I'm going to sign up for "The Hypothermic Half Marathon" in February, meaning that I need to do some serious training throughout the winter (in Canada!). On the one hand this may sound crazy, but on the other hand I'm not sure there is an other hand. Ah well, crazy is no reason not to.

Jen, Najati - I appreciate you both for giving me a jiggle, even if you didn't realize it.

-Iain

Hi, PLSers -

I love this story!

I haven't run much since PSL....had a bad cold for most of September and it's always hard for me to restart after I've not run for a while.

But last evening, whilst I was walking my dog, I started to run, just for the joy of it.  It didn't last long since my dog has short little legs, but it felt wonderful.

Iain, I appreciate you for sharing this storying, and helping me see that I've started running again.

Warm regards,

Esther

Running in the cold is so much fun! So is running with dogs :-) Glad you two are finding some time and space to run.

Almost ironically, those times at NM were the only times I ran in training for my event (a Tough Mudder), which happend a couple weekends ago and was SO amazing. 12 miles, covered in mud, swinging from things, crawling under things and climbing over things, occasionally getting shocked - all with 6 good work friends! Here are the pics I collected to show my Mom :-D  http://imgur.com/a/iAYGY

More running definitely would have helped my legs on the last few miles, tho - that was killer! So now I'm running again to train for the next one :-)

Iain, I'm looking forward to hearing about how half marathon goes!

(Also, my friends and family are all (so thankfully) doing good after the storm. Thanks!)

I'm all depressed about exercise because the effort to move house and fix up new house and haul hay and so on was all-consuming, I could not make any time for exercise. Then a death in the family threw a wrench into an already-crazy scenario. I don't like to be that person who makes excuses, but if I have 5 spare minutes right now, I unpack a box or prepare for the two conferences I'm presenting at this month. Eeek!

I hope I can find a way back... I miss running with my dogs. I'm sadly down to one dog now, but he is keen to go run. I've been trying to run with the donkeys, but of the pair, one is always willing to run, the other one not (they switch roles regularly). OK, enough whining.

Najati,

Glad to hear you're all clear. And wow. That looks like a LOT more effort than a simple 13.1 run.

I plan on signing up for the Hypothermic Half this weekend. The run's in Feb. I'll let you know how it goes.

Lisa,

Moving, fixing and hauling hay sounds like a fair bit of exercise to me ;-)

Yes – ditto to that from here as well!

I'm also finding my way back after falling into the 'I HAVE NO TIME!!!' trap that I managed to escape from, albeit briefly, after PSL. I'm not only finding my way back to running, but also to remembering that there is always time – and learning to balance it all with keeping in mind the transaction cost of taking that time.

Iain, I'm excited that you've been inspired to run again, and I can't wait to hear how the half marathon goes.

Najati, so glad to hear that you + friends + family are safe after the storm.

Hugs to all of you,
Jen

Good for all you guys! My running is currently on hold - not enough time! I like the technique of running for a little bit whilst on a walk, rather than going for a full blown run - seems easier to tackle

Najati - nice one on getting through tough mudder! I was booked in to do it in the UK, but due to timings I am unable to do it. Fortunately my crazy friend is taking my place at relatively short notice! Great Pics by the way!

hahaha - I agree that unpacking & moving hay sounds like exercise in itself!

Sorry to hear about the death in the family Lisa - it sounds like you've been up against for a while. I hope you get a chance to pause & reflect soon...
